Chaitén Rumbles
Tuesday, 29 Jul 08, volcanoes
The Volcanism Blog has translated yet another release of information from Sernageomin. It is unusual for releases to occur on consecutive days. Clearly the Chileans are worried. Here’s why:
''Intense and continuous noise has been perceptible since 24 July, when an emission of ash accumulated to the depth of 3cm around Chaitén. On 27 July weather conditions again favoured the fall of fine ash on the town, albeit in a very restricted manner…
The latest seismic data clearly shows an elevated seismicity, which has been sustained for several weeks, both in the number of earthquakes and their magnitude (a large number of them being felt by people over several days) and recorded by stations at a distance, with an increase in the number of earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.5M. Likewise, it was possible to verify that the greater part of the earthquakes of greater energy were located to the south-east and south-south-east of the Chaitén volcano.
This seismicity could relate to the beginning of the ascent of a new pulse of magma, the depth of which has not yet been determined with precision. Also, it is possible that a percentage of these earthquakes could be associated with the movement of faults in the area east of the volcano. In that case, they would correspond well to earthquakes of tectonic origin, such as those reported in previous bulletins, which were located up to 10km east of the volcano.
Remember the positions of the initial large quakes? They worried me because they appeared to outline a very large magma chamber. Sernageomin, in a bout of what may be wishful thinking, speculates these remoter quakes could be tectonic — fault related — rather than volcanic — magma related. Nevertheless, we must again consider the possibility of a world-class eruption. |

''Chaitén Blows Up
Friday, 1 Aug 08, volcanoes
Weather is cloudy at the volcano, but the cloud base was high enough for viewing when the big eruption began soon after dawn. The webcam showed a huge widening of the plume base — the whole dome-top blowing away — then an immense darkness, then the paler ashfall running coastward. The camera may not survive long, if this is as big an event as I suspect. Winds have shifted to W at upper levels, but NE near the surface, so at least some of the plume is coming over the camera location.
Satellite images are only updated every three hours. It may be awhile before we know the extent of the explosion plume in the upper atmosphere. The seismic activity of recent days suggests it may be significantly bigger than anything seen before.
Update: The ashfall has thinned and a little light is visible near the mountain. We have seen a big explosion, not the onset of paroxysmal eruption — yet. I have a medical appointment at midday, and I will not be able to watch non-stop, but I’ll check back as much as possible.
Update 2: Satellite image appears to show explosion plume running east, commingled with high clouds. But the event had already ended at the time of the photo. It is not over: expect more and bigger explosions soon. Meanwhile the US prepares to regulate CO2 at huge cost to end warming that stopped by itself a decade ago. Go tell the idiots to desist.''
you can just get a glimpse of the ongoing more vigorous eruption on the webcam.

I have had a couple of glimpses, and it is erupting pretty vigorously.
Look at this SE facing camera shot from 13:04:13 (Chile time) today.

See that blurring of the shot? that is the quakes rocking the airport.

Chaitén Quakes
Friday, 1 Aug 08, volcanoes
Sernageomin has released a new bulletin, longer and more detailed than any before, giving charts and numbers of seismic events in recent days. The Chilean authorities seem to be getting better at collating and circulating relevant information. Those who take an interest in the eruption should be grateful. I was interested to learn today that the depth of the numerous stronger quakes cannot be triangulated. The two distant recording stations are N and NNE of the volcano, which makes it impossible for them to get a fix, absent more equipment installed further south. Perhaps that situation can be remedied. The pattern of quakes is perplexing. Information on their depth might shed more light on their nature.
In brief, total quake numbers have declined by about two thirds, prior to today, but the number of strong quakes remained high, and they therefore constituted a greater proportion of the total. Numerous magnitude 4.0 quakes have been recorded. I suspect seismicity has been even more intense today, because the communications towers at Chaitén airport have rocked visibly in the webcam view.
Satellite photos have been difficult to interpret. There is a dense jet-stream plume of mid and high level cloud passing over the area. The volcanic ejecta are merging with cloud, and it would take false color imagery to sort out what is what. We can hope that will be forthcoming soon. My best guess is that the continuous eruptive plume is rising to an elevation of 15,000 to 20,000 feet at this time. This is not confirmed by VAAC, which has not issued a new release all day. I remain persuaded by the seismic pattern that more intense activity is imminent. |

There were no casualties. The volcano was not involved. on one hand they are saying the volcano was not involved, then ‘don’t try to return to live in the town, because this is just the kind of thing that can happen’
wonder if there's magma coming to the surface under Chaiten town? |
