Want to save on food cost? Try The ultimate ethical meal: a grey squirrel...

It's low in fat, low in food miles and completely free range. In fact, some claim that Sciurus carolinensis - the grey squirrel - is about as ethical a dish as it is possible to serve on a dinner plate.

The grey squirrel, the American cousin of Britain's endangered red variety, is flying off the shelves faster than hunters can shoot them, with game butchers struggling to keep up with demand. 'We put it on the shelf and it sells. It can be a dozen squirrels a day - and they all go,' said David Simpson, the director of Kingsley Village shopping centre in Fraddon, Cornwall, whose game counter began selling grey squirrel meat two months ago.

Yep, you can pick 'em up off the road, often fresh and still in one piece. Nothing' like a bit of road-kill. Same goes for deer, wild boar, pheasant, partridge and wood pigeon. Stay away from seagulls as they have usually been eating off the landfill sites and will be toxic. Don't eat fox either; really toxic, especially the liver. Give you the screaming shits, like nothing else on earth. Good "huntin'"

Learn to can/preserve your harvest. Find out what vegetables will come back on their own, and do well in drought.

I have potatoes and beets that come back on their own, and this year my carrots are going to flower and make seeds. All of them do well in our hot and dry climate, and all three will winter in the ground for later harvest. Carrots will grow for a year, here, and while they're too strong for fresh eating, they cook up sweet and nutritious.

You will need to find out what does well in your climate. Find some old-timers that can tell you what does well, there.

So funny, I started a thread at another site (copied it from someone else)
asking for recipes on squirrel.

Stew was the best, it goes a long way.

As far as the garden get a few (3-4) chickens. Not only do you get fresh eggs the poop makes great fertilizer for the garden.
In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

The black squirrels are tastier.

If you cage them up and antagonize them before you kill them it makes the meat taste better. That's what they do to the puppies just before the slaughter.

They's good eaten.
