If this is really true, then the USGS and FEMA could be held liable for any deaths from a resulting quake. I hardly think this is the case, and I am not trying to debunk this.

I agree... and there are some big military bases on the West Coast. I have military family members there who I know aren't going anywhere.

The 103 P-wave from the huge China earthquake
goes right across the USA... as the 103 P-wave
from the large California eq [and all the other
recent eq swarms in CA/NV] went across China.

Hi Is45 hf

So what's the deal with these "P" waves? Can you explain a bit about them? I don't think I really understand what they are or what they do...

 Quoting: Tessa

I am hardly an expert, but some think
P-waves may affect seismic activity in
other areas.

The USGS puts out a map of P-waves for
all large earthquakes.

Here is more USGS info:

" A P-wave is a compressional wave that makes the rock vibrate parallel to the direction of its movement.

Since it is a very fast wave traveling through rock at between four and seven kilometers per second, the P-wave is the first wave to arrive at a recording station following an earthquake.

**

There is another important difference between P-waves and S-waves.

Although both can pass through solid rock, only P-waves can also pass through gases and liquids. "

ANY information on what's happening in/around Mt. Ranier would be helpful, if anyone has anything solid (no pun intended) to speak of...

Thanks
Mom
 Quoting: OneAngryMom

Hi Mom,

I don't see any thing major going on, and haven't had any reports other than the OP writer, who just maintains it has been 'active' where he is in near Bend, OR.

The volcano Webicorders are not showing any major activity for Rainier [link to www.pnsn.org]
but oddly, the Fremont station seems to be offline altogether.

Other than that, things seem very calm.

Is geologists where being instructed to leave the WC, then wouldn't we know about?

Afterall, they have families and friends too. Word would travel fast, especially at universities and other scientific institutions.

Good question - since this report just came in 4 days ago, this may be the first we are seeing of it.

Time will tell...

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
I do believe earthquakes can be somewhat predicted. I have a bad feeling about a 9.0 in Reno. I'm no expert but it seems a 9.0 in Reno could do serious damage in San Francisco and Sacramento. Look at this quake in China, felt for hundreds of miles, and it was only a 7.9. Maybe you could expect at least a 7.0 in Sacramento and San Fran if a 9.0 hit Reno?

I do not believe USGS would be evacuated, no way.

It may be that this area in China geologically is like or similar to the geolgoy of the areas affected by the New Madrid zone which is really subject to activity therein and also due to building codes differing from California requirements, particularly since 1989 Loma Prieta. You have a mighty sizeable and vast mountain range between Reno (the Verdi area) and the valley.????????????????I live on the western side of this raNGE JUST ABOVE sACRAMENTO AND WE ARE FAIRLY INSULATED FROM QUAKES.

Quake scientist truely love their work, why else would they spend their whole life waiting and wondering for a couple minutes of tragic payoff every few years??

If these scientists 'knew' a quake was coming, they wouldn't leave if their life depended on it!

This information is fiction, imo.

From: John Jay Harper
Subject: ... Huge Earthquake Hits West Coast USA ...

FWIW

This was the black and white news headline above that I saw in a strong vision at 4AM Sunday as it startled me from a sound sleep.

More so, I was in Seattle last week in fact and sensed via extremely high-pitched ear tones that the undersea volcanism was becoming active off the Washington-Oregon coast. Again, it's time to prepare for a wild ride if you live on the coastlines of the Ring of Fire, in particular, now.

As I get more, I will update my website's blog too.

Be prepared to move quickly if you haven't already done so. A forewarning will be given .... a 3.5 mag, hopefully this will convince those that haven't gotten to safety yet.

To follow-up on my earlier comments under this same heading, I am now sensing that when the West Coast has its mega-quake, it will be centered on the Mendocino Fault line off the coast of Eureka, CA. More so, that the magnitude will be circa +/-M8.5.

John

PS. Nonetheless, I still am predicting that the Cascadia Subduction Zone will be involved in the
eruption of Mt. Rainier, WA on/about the same timeline as "The Eureka Event," as I will call it.

WHEN WILL ANYNONE HAVE 1st HAND info? anyone?

i remember the guy that called art bell in the mid 90's...weeping as he described what was coming to this planet...he was an engineer at area 51...knew of 'something' coming and that the govt was preparing...but not by telling people...by building places for the elite to survive.

that was real.

very few real reports.

Re: USGS on watch for extreme seismic activity on West Coast
Well, all I can say is that I have been emailing the guy who wrote the OP throughout the day and all he can tell me is that was what he was told.

All I am thinking is the fellow working for the USGS was personally very alarmed by the reports he was getting and may have gone a bit overboard with his warning.

I know that if I was a seismologist and had some kind of 'inside info', I would also be very excited to see what happens, and would not be running from uncertain peril, but I also wouldn't be telling too many people.

It just sounds like someone in the USGS overheard something and panicked a little.

Remember, USGS doesn't just do earthquake studies.

It looks like the ground has been skakin' up in that area since February!

Here is a link to a 5/9/08 article from a local area newspaper. The story details how local residents are dealing with the ongoing fear from these daily quakes.

[link to www.rgj.com]

There might be something to your contacts information OP, thanks for sharing the details. I doubt the USGS will announce a volcano warning. But if they have left town I wonder if they will mention their departure before, or after, the locals find out their gone. And if they've left the State without even issuing a warning, that would be unreal!!!

Being on the West Coast I have been through plenty of EQ's, including some pretty big ones. I've dealt with aftershocks lasting from days, up to weeks at a time. But for the ground to still be skaking after 3 months! That's kind of crazy, and it's no wonder the residents are all on edge up there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 410551

And do tell why would the USGA not tell anyone of a coming volcano. Just what would be the reasoning behind not letting anyone know.

Has anyone noticed the Chinese Earthquake and Chaiten Volcano are nearly opposite ends of the Earth. Could this mean there is a deeper connection?

Spooky, look at the P-wave map posted earlier on this thread. Notice the opposite center of the wave when it travels across the globe. It shows Chaiten is practically near opposite ends. Could be an astronomical influence like, gravity wave or object tugging on us.
