Is It Worth It To Have Kids?
Quote

Just gathering opinions. Is it worth it, knowing they will be just as imperfect as we are, that they too will eventually get old, suffer and die. That you cannot protect them from everything and you just never know what their future will hold despite your best hopes. My great aunt, for example, outlived both of her children and her husband. How strange must that be. Perhaps it is really selfish to have children..Any opinions?

Whether or not to have kids will probably be one of the MOST IMPORTANT decisions you ever make.

Think long and hard about it.

Personally, I don't have any because I would be such a lousy father, and have no feelings for or against kids. They just hold zero interest for me.

Based on what you wrote...I wouldn't.

But based on what I know...I would.

You don't have to think about this stuff. One day someone will say or you will say...I'm pregnant. And then you can decide.

well, today's world or not, what's the difference? we just have more chemicals and better weapons. But for example people living during WWII weren't that much better off, either. So, I guess it's a general question, regardless of economy, wars, and political situation.

Is everything really God's will? What about the kids who are mentally ratarded or severely disabled? What kind of god would have a will like that for them?

It depends on the kind of woman you can find (or man)

Things are so much more complex in today's world. For those of us who prefer the simplicity of earlier times, it's better to remain single.

Most people are hopelessly addicted to the system, to having new toys, to being consumption and gossip whores... to going out partying and eating out all the time, etc etc etc.. endless amount of mind numbing superficial activities.. conversation that is just one witty one liner after another with no substance whatsoever...

don't "settle" for anything. Demand exactly what you are looking for. hf

Being a father (or mother) is not something to take lightly. I was partying into my 30's when my girlfriend (now wife) told me she was pregnant. Fortunately I was burning out on the club scene and she was a descent human being, so we got married (can't say I gave up clubbing entirely back then). My wife had a very difficult delivery (finally had a c-section) and my son spent about a week in neonatal ICU but after what seemed like forever helping her push, seeing her eyes roll back in her head from the strain, nurses pushing me out of the way and the doctor cutting into my wife and pulling my son out of her I decided right then and there I was committed to them both, regardless of my happiness. I've had another son since then and my oldest will be a sophmore this year. I can only say that if you do decide to have children nurture them, give them love even when you don't feel like being in a loving mood, get on their butt when they act up and give them credit when they do good. Most of all, teach them to be sane in a crazy world

I have 2 kids. Aged 18 (& graduating from high school on May 18th) & 12. Being a parent is the most rewarding experience you can have.

I'm involved in all their school activities. I'm on a first name basis with many of the teachers & administrators because I'm so involved with the schools.

At home, teaching them good morals, having fun during the holidays & family vacations are great.

There is a delicate balance between discipline & love.

Re: Is It Worth It To Have Kids?Quote

We carefully considered having children years ago.

However both of us have hereditary (genetically linked) disorders/diseases which we considered to be too much to inflict upon a potential child.

Heart disease is in the spouse's family. The males tend to have their first heart attack near or around age 50.

"Weak" livers appear to be on my side of the family, 3 out of 5 of my mother's siblings died due to liver issues early in life.

Diabetes also runs in my family, skipping generations and hitting seemingly at 'random'.

These are not issues that one would desire their child to suffer from.

On top of that was our then present financial situation. We carefully considered our net worth and laid that against an estimated inflation and against known expenses (clothing, food, shelter, education, 'toys' like computers and cell phones and we pessimistically estimated a continued growth in 'childhood needs' based upon the changes over our life time.

Then we looked at the big picture - the population of earth (prior to reaching 6 billion) the then current political weather and trends in social change.

Aside from the genetic disorders or the potential harm of those, our financial outlook looked 'good' - however here we are with economic issues we did not calculate for. With the news filled with warning of global warming, and all of the other crap we here on earth are doing we are 'content' with our choice to not bring another person into the world.

These factors and more are things you should consider before having a child. I do not know your family history for disease, I do not know our financial situation.

I will assume that as a potential parent you understand the need to give your own child the advantages you did not have and of course would have a keen desire to bring a child into the world with the most positive potential that you can provide.

We still reserve the ability to adopt. We have considered it more than once.

I did not ask about marriage. I don't have any doubt I want to get married. The only issue is having kids, knowing that there are no guarantees as to their health, well-being, future, etc., and that unfortunately they will also have to eventually die, which is the biggest problem for me.

No. It's not worth it to have children anymore. Too much is changing too fast. The world we know is not what will be. Especially if you have to ask, you already are half aware as to why.

You're looking for guarantees? You've come to the wrong species to ask that question.

I have two children and was in my forties when both were born. It' the greatest gift imaginable, but I didn't realize it until it happened to me.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have one in college, one in HS and one in grade school. It is more than rewarding.

I think only selfish people do not want children (excluding those who really cannot afford it financially). There is no greater joy in life!!!!

Thos who fear the world, supposed impending doom etc. probably should not have children. They are not of the nececessary mental state to raise a child responsibly since they have no grasp on reality or common sense.

Fearful people are like vermin...we are far better off without them. They add nothing to forwarding society as a whole.

Re: Is It Worth It To Have Kids?Quote

IF you plan on doing it right it is a huge commitment and alot of work; and that is an understatement.

I have a 16-yr-old son. Since he is homeschooled - I couldn't have a career, which means no paycheck. But - it is worth it - as he isn't influenced by the little cretans in the public "prisons." He is also brilliant and literally a genius. Someday he may be leading the revolution. Who knows. LOL

I will probably have to return to the work force to pay for his college if I want to keep my current frugal lifestyle. I'd rather pay cash for his schooling than go into debt.

I find it sooo fulfilling. That kind of love cannot be found just anywhere. The depth of love is incredible.

I also enjoy the simple day-to-day things. i.e.- we watch comedians as we eat lunch together m-f. He is cool and I can talk to him about any subject. Which is hard to do w/teens. LOL

Re: Is It Worth It To Have Kids?Quote

Definitely worth it. Great fun in all ages but my personal favorite ages are when they are like six and above. I never cared much for the kindergarten ages, much more rewarding when they are becoming increasingly autonomous and develop their own tastes and will.

I wouldn't mind having a few more kids in the pipeline, soon the existing ones will all have moved out and I think it will feel rather empty... on the other hand the first grandchildren will probably arrive in just a couple of years from now so the fun will continue regardless!

Highly recommended!
