Burj Dubai will be nearly half a mile high, at 800 metres tall
The construction of what will be the world´s tallest building is set to begin in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building contract was awarded to a consortium led by the South Korean Samsung Corporation on Thursday.

The Burj Dubai tower will stand 800 metres tall - just 5 metres shy of half a mile - once completed in 2008. That will be nearly 300 metres taller than the tallest floored building in the world today, the Taipei Tower in Taiwan.

The new tower’s unique, three-sided design will ascend in a series of stages, around a supportive central core and boast a total of 160 floors, accessible via a series of double-decker elevators. Its shape will be integral to its impressive size. The design is intended to reduce the impact of wind and to reduce the need for a stronger core - allowing for more space - as it ascends.

"It´s almost like a series of buildings stuck together," says Mohsen Zikri, a director at UK engineering consultants Arup. "As you go up you need less and less lifts and less core."

Military precision
A key challenge will be the logistics involved in construction, Zikri told New Scientist. "You need things to be delivered with military precision or you will have chaos on the ground."

That sounds like a cool building, but the analogy to military precision is just laughable.

Somehow I think it will turn into the biggest target in the M.E. They´ll have to pay Al Qaida for "protection."

Re: Construction of world´s tallest tower to begin
its only part of the story:
the chicago company is the same that is doing the revit 911 towers aka WTC now called Freedom Tower NYC, this will become tallest until Burj is completed in 2008.

1st: Dubai used to belong to the calif of Baghdad, Iraq at one time it was taken by the East India Company as harbour to the east, it was returned to the sultan of UAE, it houses Al Jazeera and others. Dubai in fact is the ancient Babylon revilalized, you have the first underwater hotel there, the largest skiing center of the world in the desert,it will outdo Las Vegas

2nd: the build a tower in Glasgow a few years ago that rotates with the wind, saving 30% of steelstructure weight, check rotating homes

3rd. the chaos part is untrue. The company uses Autodesk buzzsaw for collaboration which is the worlds cutting edge CAD software for coordination of buildings, same as used in Freedom Towers NYC.

I know abit about it since I was looking for a job with company and read in forums their employees in NYC were not adequately insured when having to attend construction sites there, that put me off for the time being.

if you look for job in Dubai they will never grant citizenship to you, your expatriate, if your employer has one complaint about you- off you go. Your not allowed to bring in your family, only with employers consent. The ordinary Dubai household has two expatriate servants,
try to get a hotel at Dubai, its nearly impossible at the moment, tried for one week
