Bush Slammed Over 'Golf Sacrifice'

President Bush has come under fire after saying he ditched his golf clubs for the war effort.

He revealed he gave up his favourite game in 2003 to show solidarity with young Americans fighting in Iraq.

But Brandon Friedman, a veteran US infantry officer who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, said it was an "insult to all Americans" and a "slap in the face" for US troops.

Mr Friedman, who is vice chairman of the US veterans' organisation VoteVets, added: "Thousands of Americans have given up a lot more than golf for this war.

"It just shows he's a guy who doesn't understand the idea of sacrifice for your country and military service.

"Giving up golf is not a sacrifice. It shows how disconnected he is from everyday Americans, especially those who are serving in Iraq and their families."

In the interview with political newspaper Politico and Yahoo, Bush said: "I didn't want some mum whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf.

"I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

One of the most famous scenes from Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11 showed Bush on a golf course addressing reporters.

On the day the US death toll in Iraq reached the grim milestone of 4000, Bush was pictured hugging a 6ft bunny as part of the annual Easter Egg roll.
