Any vets on? Need advice about my cat.
Quote

Hi,

My vet found a mass in my 13yo cat's abdominal region at her checkup last week. She had been losing weight and wasn't herself, so I took her in.

The vet referred me to a surgeon who would take an xray and ultrasound for further diagnostics.

We went today, and he said that there is a mass in or on the bowel, but that the tests are inconclusive. He even aspirated the mass twice, but no clues.

Her bloodwork was normal except for elevated calcium. Urine normal as well.

He said the next step is surgery, but that it is in a hard to reach place. UGH! I am so torn as to what to do. He mentioned the obvious: cancer, tumor, etc., and also mentioned that it could be a granuloma, but was loathe to discuss anything in real detail without knowing what it was.

I can't imagine putting my 13yo timid cat through a difficult surgery (he said it was in a tough spot), and we may lose her on the table.

Any insight? What would you do?

We had a 13 year old ginger Tom with a mass in his neck.
The vet suggested surgery, and he died after the op.
It was heartbreaking.
He was in recovery, and i went to see him, but didn;t know they would be dragging him out to see me! I wish they hadn;t done that. i think that really finished him off, and he died shortly after from the shock of the op.
He had been quite sick before hand, and I wish we had just euthanized him and been there for him instead of putting him through an op - he died alone in a cage.
It cost us over $1,000 which we didn;t really have to spare, but what really hurts is what it did to our boy.
If your cat is not suffering with the mass, and it was just spotted during a check up, give it some time and other tests before you decide what to do.
An op is a big shock for an old body, and you might lose him in the process.

Dang. That is a tough question.

My 14-yr-old cat was in pain the other day. I spent a mint at the vet (cuz I love my kitty) and got no answers.
(x-rays, massive testing) The cat seems fine now - if a little slow moving.

I feel for you. I mean a part of you has to ask, "How many thousands of dollars do I want to spend - with no guarantee?" And the kitty will be in pain and discomfort. Plus all the drugs will probably harm his liver and kidneys. Or, do I just let nature take it's course? Applying pain medicine when necessary.

I wish you well. This is a hard decision - especially since it is a loved one who can't talk and describe his physical pain, etc.

If she's not in pain, I would leave well enough alone. Surgery is awful for a little old critter.

I had a 12 year old, Fatso,
and I loved this cat.
She developed a mass in her abdomen,
turned out it was cancer,
and I had to have her put down on 08/18/04.

Still miss her.

Keep Kitty happy as long as there isn't suffering,
and be thankful you have had the time together.

I feel fortunate I had Fatso as long as I did.

I wouldn't have the money to do it either. Especially since there is no guarantee.

I would consider doing some cleansing herbs that a cat is able to take (they can't take things like dogs can), I would also get a group of homeopathic mixes from King Bio. They are the best I've ever tried for my cats. It's easier then guessing at single remedies.

I would consider their liver detox, blood and kidney detox, lymph detox, parasite cleans and then constitutional enhancer. I would also consider a good pet probiotic like the one from Jarrow or the Culturelle. That one works good on people and pets. Also, cats do alright with simple green foods. I would consider Udos' pet essentials for cats as well.

Also, lay your hands on her and ASK her what SHE wants. It's ultimately up to her.

Some of those things can be found fairly cheap at www.luckyvitamin.com

This works.Cats usually have psychic communication with their "owners".
I had a really feral tom that used to hang out at my place, and developed cat AIDs and abcesses that I could smell twenty feet away.He bailed up in my house, asking for assisstnce, and I took him to the vet for treatment.
The vet preferred not to handle him, even with wire mesh gloves, but I had no trouble with just bare hands.
The vet suggested he be "fixed" to stop his marauding.
I asked. The cat said "no."
So I said no.
He died in a brawl shortly afterawrds, which is the way he wanted to go.
You have to respect your furry friends' decisions as much as you respect your other friends'.
As a side note, I was reading an article by a rogue vet recently which pointed out that, even though many dog and cat "owners" try to do the best by their pets with diet, that the best for both cats and dogs is raw on the bone meat, fish or chicken.
As natural a diet as possible.
Grain based food for carnivores is not natural.
This staves off or rectifies a great many health problems.

I am a vet, but don't know why a former military guy can help you out with your cat?
