Perhaps, but you infer the present leaders there. Right? Not the people generally. Right? Keep in mind that China is a very old society, going back 5000 years, more or less.
It has largely been an agrarian culture until recent times, not all that industrialized one might say. Agrarian societies are typically prone to having large families which work the land. That has happened elsewhere also. An example would be the US in earlier times, even into the present industrial age. In any case, 5000 years - more or less - is a lot of time to be creating many, many babies, mostly for the purpose of eventually producing more food for themselves and others. So, population trends in China once had a reasonable purpose in the beginning but over many centuries it got out of control, largely out of certain traditional inclinations they [and many other societies] ultimately developed. After all, it's fairly natural to want to reproduce. I've done it, so have most of you here. 5000 years of "doing it" makes one quite prolific, however good or bad that might be. But that's a fact of life.
The Chinese know they've gotten too good [or bad] at that, especially in recent times. Hence their obvious and current need for effective "birth management". Yet even then the numbers of their numbers keep on getting ever larger. What is to be done? That's clearly become an exponential mathematical problem for them! I very much doubt it's some grand conspiracy they have in mind. I'd call it a very unfortunate problematic bind. The Chinese leadership would seem unable to correct the difficulty without lots of tension, as is fairly typical of government in general everywhere which tends to adopt some "fast fix fiat" approach to things. In fact, government may be the sand in the wheels of daily life many places. My sense is that "the people" generally as a reasonable group know what's best for themselves. Political Leaders are all too often unreliable in that connection, for various reasons. So, let's stop crapping on other people when we don't have a clue as to the full nature of another's most vexing difficulties. That's lame as hell. |
