I bought one of those fly traps which is a bag filled with water and spongy thing in it that emits an attraction to flys...they crawl in bag opening

I caught close to 80 flies

if indoors, move to a room you wont be in as smell is a little fishy

Re: FLYS! How do I get rid of dozens of flys in my house?!Quote

Don't kill them. They are God's little creatures.

Just wait until late afternoon or evening and turn out all the lights in your house. Open your doors and windows so there is a way for the flies to fly out of each room to the evening twilight. All of the flies will fly outside to the light of the setting sun or to the streetlights rather than stay in the dark house.

After about twelve minutes for all of the flies to find their way outside, you can then close all of the windows and doors that you opened, and then turn on the lights.

Re: FLYS! How do I get rid of dozens of flys in my house?!Quote

Do you have any faucets that you rarely use?
They could be breeding in the pipes. How many are we talking about?
If they are breeding in pipes or drains you would see them nearby, so flush out the pipes with water and maybe pour something like vinegar in the drain.
If they are little tiny ones they are fruit flys and you have banana peels or sumpthin' like that, keep all fruit in the fridge.
The main idea here is the light idea--that one works for me in the Summer when at least one gets in the house.
You turn out all the lights, especially the television, except the one by the door and then when they go toward the door you can shoo them outside.

Re: FLYS! How do I get rid of dozens of flys in my house?!Quote

The drain/moth fly larvae feed on the sides of the drain and in the drain trap if there is an accumulation of organic debris there. You can check it by placing some tape over the opening (leave some opening for air flow). If you find these flies stuck to the tape , you have discovered the source....oh, you said "dozens", thats a lot of flies.
The ones that breed in drains or broken pipes are called "drain-flys".

Bags of water hung to keep flies away

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Restaurant operators along the coasts of Florida are trying a new, yet simple, way to repel flies on dining patios -- hanging bags of water.

Scientists say the method has no real merit, but restaurateurs on the Florida Keys and as far away as Texas swear by it, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

"It seems to be working," said Jeannie Eckbloom, a longtime server at Gator's, on the Seminole-Volusia line. "It's even keeping the birds away."

Some scientists believe the way the light shines through the water disorients the flies, which is why they are repelled.

The idea reportedly started in North Carolina a couple of years ago, where the bags were marketed as "Fly Fright." The company that sold those bags now appears to be out of business, the newspaper said.

Get a bug zapper. Not sure of the name but it is an inside bug light with sticky paper in the bottom. You could probably google indoor bug zapper and find out what it's called. Anyway, it works. The light attracts the bugs, they fly inside and get hopelessly stuck on the paper. I think the bulbs somehow stun or knock the bugs onto paper. This really works. You can stand there and watch the little peskys go runnin toward the light, you then hear a little zap, and the buzzing of the caught flies. Doesn't take too long for them to die either. Beats stinky foggers and time and task of making your own.

Thank you everybody for the helpful ideas!

I've got fresh swatters, cider vinegar, soapy water in the sink, baggies of water ready to hang and plus I scrubbed practically the whole house today.

My husband and I did the room by room Raid spray using lights to guide them out of the house.

We live in a rural area with horses and cows a half mile away... I'm sure the wind blows them my way and so I'm stuck with flies all summer.

Also, thanks for a few laughs too.

keep the windows closed to keep them from coming in then use a vacuum cleaner to remove them. its way cleaner and more effective than a swatter.

Re: FLYS! How do I get rid of dozens of flys in my house?!Quote

i, myself, loath killing anything... but last summer i had a swarm of flies... hundreds of them that just came out of no where and were all on my kitchen window ledge..

i knew there was no way to swat them without scattering them...

so *sigh* i got out the bottle of Windex... and starting spraying as fast as i could... not ONE got away.. and it killed the poor things instantly...

and the up side.. is that i got to clean my window too

it does work.. chemical still.. but at least not so very harsh... so when i see a fly.. i dont swat.. i grab the Windex..

may god bless all those lil flies that died on that fateful day *sniff*

I'm not into bug spray but this is ridiculous... I'm ready for the BIG GUNS of fly killers.

Before I go to the store, what is the best thing to use to kill flys without stinking up the house with bug spray?

Hair spray makes a mess on the walls... and besides, I ran out.

I know the ultimate fly killing "thing" (no word)
take a glas, fill it 1/3 with beer, take a drop of dish wash in it and VOALA they goes for a drink, and drown.. the dish wash makes the "thing" on the top of the beer disapear, so the flyes cant Walk on the "top" they instantly sink!!
exellent for the tiny fly devills also, they are fucking killing me in the summer, is it called bananaflyes??

Re: FLYS! How do I get rid of dozens of flys in my house?!Quote

Several weeks ago, I too was faced with tons of flies all of a sudden.

I tried the fly ribbons, which worked somewhat. But after a very short time, it becomes very unsightly having this two foot ribbon of fly paper hanging from the ceiling with 2000 flies stuck to it.

So, I investigated.

The water bags didn't work for me. Try as I might, no matter where or how they were placed, the flies still came in.

However, I did try this method and it worked incredibly well:

I took an empty 2-liter soda bottle and cut the top off, just below where it starts to narrow for the neck.

I then inverted the top of the bottle and placed it inside the body of the bottle, so that it funnels down inside.

I took several pieces of tape and taped the pieces together.

I then took some odd food items and stuck it through the funnel and into the bottom of the bottle. The bottle was then placed in strategic areas throughout the house and in my back yard.

In a very short period of time, flies became attracted to the food in the bottle and flew down inside to get it. Apparently, they are not able to fly back out the way they got in. Sort of like a roach motel for flies.

Now, here is a curious observation I made. As more flies were trapped inside the bottle, MORE flies were attracted to it!

Outside in the back yard, I noticed that a lot of flies seemed to be attracted to a recent dog dropping. As an experiment, I placed some poop inside the bottle and made sure it was set in the sun.

Lo and behold, the flies had to have come from at least the next county over!

Now, the neat thing is:

1. First and foremost, it works and without any costly or dangerous insecticides. I have dogs, cats and grand-children, so it is a major concern.

2. Costs zero dollars to make.

3. Assembles in less time than it takes to make a visit to the crapper. I guess if you really wanted to be industrious, you could build one while you're in the crapper.

4. If you peel the labels off, you can place them around the inside of the house with a minimum of distraction.

5. Strangely enough, I thought that with bits of food or poop in them, that they would eventually start to smell. As I found out, the "traps" don't really stick around long enough to smell. Once the "traps" fill with flies, you simply take the bottle to the dumpster and dispose of it.

No fuss, no muss. No insecticides. No unsightly mass burial strips hanging from the ceiling.

Give it a try. I was skeptical at first, but figured it was worth the five-minute investment in time to make and try out.

Hope this helps!

BTW: I live in AZ, if that makes any difference.

I meet a man once everyone else in this town had flies but not him, inside his home there was,nt even one fly, i asked him why he was fly free and the rest of us infested.
First he took me to the front of his house, there on the lawn was a glass bottle venus fly trap, that had flies, flying to it from all directions.
Then he took me around the back where there was another venus fly trap half full with dying flies.
Each day he emptied his traps into the garden, next he showed off his veggys, i have never seen carrots the size he was growing, and all the other plants were monsters because he put it down to these natural fertilizer capsules being the dead flies !

From working in a restaurant, the answer is easy but a lot of work. Wash everything on a regular basis. The flies won't stay if they don't have anyplace comfortable to land, and bleach and soap strip off the oils that keep them hydrated, and they won't even land. Tired of flying around, they'll leave or exhaust themselves. Either way, you won't have a problem with them buzzing around.

Note: They'll find ANYWHERE they can to land, we cleaned the restaurant regularly, but someone got lazy and skipped some of the hanging signs. Looking through the security camera, there was this mass of bugs. I walked out, they were backed in this little 1 foot sign...pretty sick deal.

After the first cleaning, just go by every week or two and clean an area, nooks and crannies. It was a restaurant with people coming and going, the doors open regularly, so it's probably easier in a house, but still, making sure there's just a hint of cleaner on everything will keep all sorts of pests away.
Be offended. It's my gift to you.

I live in a rural farm type area too. And dammit, if you open a window or a door on a nice day, they make theirselves at home :(

What I have found to be the key. Once you get a bad infestation of them, You have to get them all at one time. Attack from all angles, and dont give up til every lil bugger is dead! Then after the initial assault, as other lil buggers start to hatch, from GOD KNOWS WHERE!!! Then stay on top of it, and kill any you see.

Go to the dollar store, buy a swatter for every room! So if you walk in and see one. You dont have to search for a swatter.

And the biggest tip! They rest at night. Usually on the ceiling. It the perfect time to start WWIII on their lil tails!
