Re: Inside The LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation
Wow. I'm only just now on part 2 and my mind is already going a bajillion miles a minute.

I was raised by a hippie mom who went to anti-nuke rallies in the late 70's and early 80's as the last expression of her hippieness before "selling out" to the neo-conservative movement (which I later found out was started by the same 50's era liberals that got the hippie movement going in the mainstream in the first place...people like Irving Kristol and father of the anti-psychiatry movement, psychiatrist R.D. Laing).

To make the story weirder...I grew up on Frank Zappa and Janis Joplin and the Doors, and later in life I went into the military intelligence community (where I still keep a little more than one foot in even though I'm "out.")

Jim Morrison and Frank Zappa were 2 of my biggest influences in my youth and I've never been the kind of music fan to look up every detail on every musician I like....in short, I had no idea of Frank Zappa's mil-intel connections until now.

I always thought to myself that I had been kind of a "sell out" by following my dreams of getting into intelligence because that's what I grew up thinking I was supposed to think (Grow up on the "left", going to the "right" is "selling out") but now that I read this mind mind is just aflitter with now ten bajillion questions.

One of which is; "Was I programmed to go into the intelligence community?"

I have been reading Dave's blog since it started, so glad to have found this thread with all the links. Have looked at most of them and find the whole thing extraodinarily interesting. I must say, I find most conspiracy theories to be a little hard to swallow, and a lot of what Dave threads together, he does so with a fairly long bow. I actually travelled to LA a year ago, and stayed at a bed and breakfast right at the bottom of the Canyon. Beautiful place called The Secret Garden ( [link to www.bedandbreakfast.com] I don't drive so actually found it almost impossible to get past the County Store by foot. There is a strange feeling to the area, lovely, but with an undercurrent of forboding. If I ever make a million though I'll be sure to rent a house up there and soak up the vibes. As I was walking I was stickbeaking a bit and saw a car in a driveway, with a piece of paper and a mirror stuck to its back number plate. It had two identical pictures of a man I couldn't immediately place, but looked very creepy and had written on it in a child's hand - "Will he make contact? Is it you?". Only after reading about Houdini and his wife's seances post-death did I work it out. Again. Creepy. I agree with the above comment that the last couple of Dave's installments have been a little below his usual high standard. Whilst doing my own research, I found this rather macarbre and bad taste website: [link to www.findadeath.com] . The guy who runs it has actually made a DVD called: "The Six Degrees of Helter Skelter", which isn't too bad. A quick search and you can find a stream of it. Surprisingly interesting footage of Spahn Ranch as it is today.. Anyway, the wait goes on for a new LC installment..

strongly recommend this series, as well as McGowan's book "Programmed To Kill" which can be found as a very inexpensive ebook ($5.74 here: [link to www.diesel-ebooks.com] )

wish he'd kept going with Inside The LC, but there is a LOT there as it is...

That's intriguing that you say you sensed a strange foreboding feeling in the area when you visited. That's how I felt when I was in Washington, DC. It's oppressive there.

I agree, this is great material, and I would love to hear more.

Do you ever watch "Selling LA"? If so, watch the people/clients on that show. They will CREEP you out, especially their eyes.

His words are very current, prophetic. Agree with one of the other commenters that the author is getting it wrong about tarring the Doors with the same brush as people like Zappa.

I think it's a work in progress so seems like the roll call part is going on too long, he needs to start pulling all the threads together, maybe draw some conclusions. Agree the last coupla chapters were a bit sub par and the Black Dahlia images shouldn't be there, you can never 'unsee' those pics, a link would be better since it's only a peripheral event of the times.

Inside The LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation
Part XX
March 13, 2012

“What struck both of us was that there were huge gaps in Houdini’s life story and some puzzling inconsistencies. So we embarked on a journey to discover the real man. Early on, we discovered an important connection that most biographers seemed to miss.”
From the Introduction to The Secret Life of Houdini, by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, 2006

As noted earlier in this series, there is considerable debate over the question of whether Harry Houdini ever lived in the Laurel Canyon home known locally as the “Houdini House” (the History Channel’s Brad Meltzer’s Decoded recently aired an episode on Houdini that included a segment filmed at the site, which was unreservedly identified as the former Houdini estate; the series, however, doesn’t appear to be overly concerned with accuracy).

Even if Houdini did live in the home that now lies in ruins, his story would seem to have little relevance here. After all, Harry Houdini, widely considered to be the consummate entertainer of his era, reached the peak of his career long before there was a Laurel Canyon – before there was even that magical place known as Hollywood. What then is there to gain through an examination of the life of Harry Houdini? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

“Why people even said Dr. Crandon committed illegal operations on little children and murdered them.”
Mina/Margery Crandon

On April 29, 1911, Houdini debuted his famed Chinese Water Torture Cell escape in Southampton, England, though he had perfected and copyrighted the act well over a year earlier. The inherently dangerous stunt caused quite a sensation: “Just the sight of the apparatus was enough to give you shivers and make you believe, as one critic noted, that you were about to witness a ritual sacrifice.”

Around that same time, Houdini was, for reasons unknown, busily buying mothballed electric chairs at auctions across the country.
