Question about growing radishes
I planted some radishes over a month ago and none of them are growing the radish bulbs. The steams are about 3-4" above ground now and red. Did I do something wrong?

Re: Question about growing radishes
red? you must have planted beets, they have red stems and leaves before they put on a bottom. Radishes have green leaves and you should be able to pick them by now.. very easy to grow and ready in a month.

Re: Question about growing radishes
google radish growing, the only thing i can think of is you don't have deep enough soil?

i hate to say it, but they are so easy to grow, and mature fast 25-30 days :)

It sounds to me that you did not thin them to 1 inch apart.

Re: Question about growing radishes
I found myself with the same problem.

What needs to be done, and it's not to late, is to take your plants and separate them and plant them again to just the part under the leaves.

The seeds probably were planted to close to the top of the soil, or as with mine, the soil settled enough in the container to cause this.

After you do this, they should start acting more like radishes.

Re: Question about growing radishes
Well, I planted them 2" apart in a pot. The pot is about 8-12" deep. I planted several different varieties of them. They all are growing red stems.

Too strange. I planted more today so I will see what happens to them. I guess I will just pull up the others. I even grew just one in a soup can and it is doing the same thing. By the looks of the pics I googled there is plenty of room in the containers.

Beats the heck out of me.

Thank you. I will try that then. How far down in the soil do you plant yours?

Up to the part where the leaves begin, just a bit below that. Now they are starting to plump like radishes should.

Thank you. I will try that then. How far down in the soil do you plant yours?

So you transplant yours? I just sowed the seed about 1/4 or 1/2 inch and spaced them 2" apart and let them do their thing.

Re: Question about growing radishes
OP you are growing them too dark and warm. Push the radish plant into the ground further and put them outside. Radish is a cool weather crop.

No, they are radishes. I planted several different types too. They all did the same thing. I will try again and see what the heck I did.

Thanks !

Re: Question about growing radishes
-never heard of transplanting radishes. I always plant mine by seed.

-make sure to plant in rich soil (all purpose fertilizer)

-radish plants prefer cooler weather

-if you leave radishes too long in the ground, they will get hot tasting. Hot tasting radishes can be cooked or pickled.
