I grew up in Buffalo also, and there is a little something special about the people there. Genuine and loyal are the first words that come to mind. I'm not sure if it's the long winters, 4 superbowl losses in a row, never getting a major league baseball team, countless corner bars, wide variety of ethnicities, or good ole Bethlehem Steel.
I went off to college, then lived in the south, and now out west. I always carried that same Buffalo pride Russert talks about, and mixing in with all races and social backgrounds was second nature as explored the country. Certainly not a cocky pride, more like an enduring pride.
My grandfather worked at Bethlehem steel, served in WW2, and had a lot of heart and soul. Loved his country and taught me many things. He passed away 8 years ago from a miserable form of cancer that took this 250 pound, athletic, concrete and steel working man and shriveled his body to 75 pounds in 8 months.
In the process he never complained and never once stayed over night in a hospital. My grandmother took care of him in the middle of their living room until the day he died. Our family happens to be sicilian, and everyone of us flew in from all parts of the country to be with him. I sat bedside with him for a week straight. He had nothing left, but his spirit and heart. He waited until the last relative (one of my aunts) finally was able to fly in to Buffalo from Arizona, and then passed away after she was able to say goodbye that very same night.
It wasn't until last year, that our family found out that my grandfather was used as a guinea pig while he worked at Bethlehem Steel. He was stationed in the one and only section of the plant where he unknowlingly and without protective gear, Rolled, straightened, grinded, cooled, and handled URANIUM FUEL RODS 12 hours a day, 6 days a week in nothing but a t-shirt.

He would come home with radioactive clothes every night which my grandmother washed and ultimately exposed the entire family and all his kids to. His job was a secret part of the Manhatten Project and as you can read in the above article, wasn't even admitted or known about until 2006.
Regardless of your opinion of Tim Russert, I will always give him the benefit of the doubt. Buffalo and the people raised there would rather die than have you question their heart and loyalty. |

I really don't think he thought he was going to die. And to me seems to be untimely death to me. Just something that ring's False in these times where having. Its just more Proof that things aren't what they seem. I feel Sadness of death because he wasn't done doing what he wanted to do. Its just another twist that where all going to have to live throw.
