PARIS (AFP) — Genetic material from outer space found in a meteorite in Australia may well have played a key role in the origin of life on Earth, according to a study to be published Sunday.
European and US scientists have proved for the first time that two bits of genetic coding, called nucleobases, contained in the meteor fragment, are truly extraterrestrial.
Previous studies had suggested that the space rocks, which hit Earth some 40 years ago, might have been contaminated upon impact.
Both of the molecules identified, uracil and xanthine, "are present in our DNA and RNA," said lead author Zita Martins, a researcher at Imperial College London.
RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is another key part of the genetic coding that makes up our bodies.
These molecules would also have been essential to the still-mysterious alchemy that somehow gave rise, some four billion years ago, to life itself.
"We know that meteorites very similar to the Murchison meteorite, which is the one we analysed, were delivering the building blocks of life to Earth 3.8 to 4.5 billion years ago," Martins told AFP in an interview.
Competing theories suggest that nucleobases were synthesised closer to home, but Martins counters that the atmospheric conditions of early Earth would have rendered that process difficult or impossible.
A team of European and US scientists showed that the two types of molecules in the Australian meteorite contained a heavy form of carbon -- carbon 13 -- which could only have been formed in space.
"We believe early life may have adopted nucleobases from meteoric fragments for use in genetic coding, enabling them to pass on their successful features to subsequent generations," Martins said.
If so, this would have been the start of an evolutionary process leading over billions of years to all the flora and fauna -- including human beings -- in existence today.
The study, published in Earth Planetary Science Letters, also has implications for life on other planets.
"Because meteorities represent leftover materials from the formation of the solar system, the key components of life -- including nucleobases -- could be widespread in the cosmos," said co-author Mark Sephton, also at Imperial College London.
"As more and more of life's raw materials are discovered in objects from space, the possibility of life springing forth wherever the right chemistry is present becomes more likely," he said.
Uracil is an organic compound found in RNA, where it binds in a genetic base pair with another molecule, adenine.
Xanthine is not directly part of RNA or DNA, but participates in a series of chemical reactions inside the RNA of cells.
The two types of nucleobases and the ratio of light-to-heavy carbon molecules were identified through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, technologies that were not available during earlier analyses of the now-famous meteorite.
Even so, said Martins, the process was extremely laborious and time-consuming, one reason it had not be carried out up to now by other scientists.

Right here! Where did the meteor come from? What is the space it is in? What is space? What created the laws of physics guiding it here? How did the universe exist in the first place for any of it to take place? If it was a big bang, what made it go bang? What was before it? What will be after it is all gone? Ever had a close call, or a brush with death in your life? What told you to do that action that stopped you from being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Real science does not allow you to have all the answers without being open to all the questions. If you just ask God a question, and you are really sincere and it is a real problem, not what color are my shoes... he will answer. It is not in the form of a booming voice or a burning bush. I don't know, it's just that people have looked that hard to find any signs of life elswhere in the galaxy, and with the exception of Earth it's all proved to be totally, entirely and completely hostile and inhospitable to the existence of life in any form whatsoever that i've come to the conclusion that everything is so perfectly in balance that this life here on earth as we know it could not possibly be merely a coincidence. Our ancestors saw it beneficial to walk up right to minimize surface area exposure to UV rays. Multiple species of prehumans came and went. Finally the dawn of homo sapiens. We used tools and communicated verbally. We created agriculture which allowed civilization to rise. Thousands more years passed and so did many cultures and empires. Religion was created to control the masses and satisfy the urge that there was something more. Some explored the oceans and sailed to a new land. The United States was created to ensure that man had inalienable rights. The some of all these organisms reproducing billions of years became your ancestors and each generation had to be in the right place at the right time to meet and reproduce with the ones they did. Eventually your great grandparents, grand parents, and finally your parents. Your parents happened to be in the same place at the same time and your dad said all the right things in order for a chance to reproduce with your mom. In all the billions of sperm that he produced in his life time lost by a wet dream or flushed down a toilet, in that one moment of the millions of other sperm that one unparticular combined with the egg to create you. Which is in essence what you god types are doing.. someone told you such and such superbeing did such and such thing, and you just accept it. When really its a idea virus that infects innocent people and spreads like a plague. People brainwashed their kids to accept it, the kids then brainwash their own kids, and so on over the last 2-3 thousand years. Before that, it was some other nonsense, and before that, some other nonsense.. its been going on ever since mankind has been able to question his place in the universe, and in a few thousand years no doubt there will be some other nonsense that people will just accept.

It is a rather exclusionary theory, like "only from outer space." Can people get over this either or complex, basing everything on scarcity and choices? How about a theory that states "life may have not only developed in outer space, but also here on earth, and all of this according to basic physics and chemistry."

Has anybody caught these 2 parts? In regards to the first one, 40 years is a ENOUGH time for earth's micro-organisms to work there way into the meteorite, they even say 'might have been contaminated', more likely that it very well was contaminated with EARTH's Micro-Organisms and none other.
As for the Carbon 13 that's another obvious one. Of course the Carbon 13 can only be formed in space, where else would of the meteorite gotten those molecules from? DUH! Its not hard to figure that when the meteorite landed, it had its space ingredients then hits planet earth, and contaminates with whats on our planet.
