Two quakes hit Sumatra June 25, 2008

A 5.8-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island today, an hour after a 5.6-magnitude quake had hit the the area, geologists said.

The new quake hit at 9.53am (1253 AEST), 65km south-west of the city of Gunung Sitoli in North Sumatra province, the Indonesian geophysics agency said in a text message. It was 17km deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage or a tsunami alert but the quake was felt by residents in Gunung Sitoli and the nearby city of Sibolga, a geophysics official who identified himself as Acep told AFP.

"It is not an aftershock since its magnitude is stronger than the previous (earthquake)," he added.

The United States Geological Survey measured the quake at six magnitude at a depth of 35km.

The earlier 5.6-magnitude quake struck at 8:52 am (11.52am AEST) 42km north-west of Gunung Sitoli at a depth of 12km.

Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 that killed 168,000 people in Aceh province alone.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet causing seismic and volcanic activity.
