Obama, the Goat Shepherd
Obama, the Goat Shepherd

by Cris Sheridan
June 27, 2008

Only four years ago, before his timely election as Senator, Barack Obama made his glorious entrance into the public scene by choosing to announce himself as the son of a humble goat-herder. Although he has reached far beyond such a simple life, young Obama has made it clear that his mission is to shepherd millions of disillusioned Christians into the fold of the Democratic Party. How does he propose to do this? By igniting a revival among the Christian left. For those who disagree with the traditional pillars of conservative Christianity, i.e. the sanctity of marriage and the sanctity of life, taking a more progressive and liberal view of the bible, Obama has become a shepherd and messiah of sorts.
Although he has made it very clear that one of his primary missions as president is to reunite America away from left and right, he has also shown by his words and record (having the most liberal in Congress) that he does not intend to do this by taking a centrist role between the two, but rather by attempting to drive a wedge between the conservative right and those largely sympathetic to Christian beliefs. This does not come without any hurdles however, because among the unprecedented crowds drawn by his very eloquent and moving speeches, Obama must somehow feed from the same basket both a militant faction of liberal atheists and a freshly evangelized group of new-believers. Fortunately, trying to mix clay with iron has never worked quite well before.
So, how would President Obama pull it off? Since he is certainly a strong supporter of abortion and gay-rights we cannot expect him to compromise his values for the sake of potentially offending a rather small left-leaning Christian lobby. No, the only way to mix the two is by sharpening the iron and beating the clay. He must both invigorate the will of liberal atheists by further separating the influence of the church over the political and governing sphere while simultaneously silencing the voice of those who speak out against accomodating views. And with the prospect of Democrats having a majority in the House and Senate with the most liberal president to ever preside, there is no doubt that change will be the exact thing America sees in four short years.
The most frightening thing about Obama, however, is not his political and social ethics, but that believes he is actually doing, as stated, "the Lord's work". To him the struggle for homosexual equality is akin to the plight of racial equality and the abolitionist movement; the freedom to abort a child a great victory in removing an unfair yoke upon women. It is little doubt that the verbal protest of such "godly" causes will be answered by rulings of "hate-speech" in conjunction with fines, penalties, and the removal of tax-exempt status for churches and non-profit organizations. The possible enforcement of strict codes on the air, television, or in the pulpit will effectively force the Christian-right to sheer their coats and diminish from the public sphere. Such predictions may seem to be nothing more than alarmist to some, but in terms of loosing moral clarity, within no more than a month's time the sitting liberal justices of the Supreme Court have ruled in favor of child rapists, extended the exclusive rights of American citizens to those who wish to kill us, and narrowly supported by one vote the foundational right guaranteed by the constitution to bear arms. Had President Bush's appointments of conservative Justices Alito and Roberts not gone through, the public would now be helpless in protecting themselves against the tyranny of a corrupt government, the very thing our founders feared most.
While Jesus was here on earth he gave the parable of separating the sheep on his right and the goats on his left, showing us the nature of each. It is no mere coincidence that this same dichotomy has persisted and evolved even into the differing moral philosophies between conservatives and liberals. While no such clear divisions are perfect in human eyes, it is obvious that they exist in God's. And to consistently explain away certain verses from the bible because of their inability to conform to our human notions of justice and equality is to invite, in the end, only anarchy and division. Unfortunately, under Obama's attempt to unite Christians behind a more inclusive view of the world, the majority of Americans will find themselves only separated further to the left and holding in greater disdain the sheep who uphold traditional Christian values.

Re: Obama, the Goat Shepherd
That is one extremely long paragraph.

I guess they don't teach people how to write in school anymore.
