My car got destroyed in a recent flood - what should I buy?
|
Anonymous Coward User ID: 289969 6/28/2008 10:33 PM Report abusive post | My car got destroyed in a recent flood - what should I buy?

I'm curious what you all think I should buy. I do need a car but was thinking of holding off for a couple of months and banking the money.
The insurance company paid me ~$6k.
I'd like to buy a crossover, and am considering something new.
Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks in advance!

Wanted a new Jetta TDI, but diesel is through the roof.
Honda Fit... Reliable, more room inside than an SUV, fun to drive, roomy for someone 6'4" even, excellent gas millage. |

We both work and need to move kids around -- which is a trick.
Our other car is a minivan. |

Quite honestly, I'd rather just buy a wreck for $2k and not spend the money on a car... particularly right now. We owe about $14k on our other car (pay $334 a month.)
I know they are a bad investly, plus, who knows how long til things get really bad ... I'd kind of rather be out of debt. |

kn
Thanks a lot. that's kind of what I was thinking.
Money has been very tight this year, so it seems like an opportunity to "get ahead" a bit in savings.
How much time do you think we have before things get "really bad"? It would be pretty silly to be buying a new car, and have the bottom drop out of everything.
It seems like things are like musical chairs right now, and, at some point, someone's going to be left standing.
(and I don't want it to be me, with a bunch of debt!)
On the other hand, having a 4WD to bug out in makes me feel a bit better. |

My god, why? The Pious looks like a baboon's bottom, in fact I would rather look at a baboon's bottom, is slow, handles like a dying elephant, is as complex as the IRS code, and is going to cost a buttload of money in a few years when the batteries go toes up.
And it doesn't get that great a fuel mileage number.
But it makes people THINK they are doing the Right Thing, which makes them feel better, and after all, isn't feeling better the whole point.
Well.....no, actually, but the empty headed compassion facists and ecomentalists don't know any better. |

ROFL - our other car is a Hyundai- I like the warranty on it. It's been a great car (minivan.)
I wonder about Hondas though - 3 years, 36k miles.
Anyone ever buy something from Carmax? |
