I have "souveniers" of duct tape and plastic, including lots of plastic yard bags. But even more important than that is having a goodly supply of toilet paper at the ready, or lots of laundry soap if you don't. :)

Re: I hate to give you more doom and gloom, but...
I had posted a couple of months ago of a conversation I had with a man in the oil business (back in April). He said to expect gasoline to go up to $9-12 dollars a gallon within a 9 month time frame.

So...it doesn't look good.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 460895

I would hope that the truckers would just park it a while i protest and the sheople would stay home with flu ( avian?) like symptoms when that happens.we may stay home for lack of ability too buy 9-12$ a gallon gas. That is when those freexer prepared beans and rice and buillon and soup and pasta will be worth it's weight in gold. Ammunitiion will be too cause some folks will want to trade you some of their ammo for all of your food! Doom and Doom again. All th while....the energy crisis-solving Alaska pipeline oil continues to go straight to our favorite trading [artner RED china who considers us their big dmbassed Gomer enemy the ticking of the clock of doom grows ever more loud as it echos thru th fog of harshness and the ringing of it's chimes pierece the eardrums of the small and weak and the embryos quake in the womb, nevermore to gleefully kick in anticioation of the soccer game of the youth that they may not acchieve....

Re: I hate to give you more doom and gloom, but...
i've given this a lot of thought over the years. i've put myself in a pretty good position. no mortgage, garden, small town, rain water collection, etc. BUT there are other factors and i'm not sure how they will play out.

what kind of work will there be for me? right now i work part time at lowes in the lawn and garden section. will that be there in say five years? my wife is a massage therapist at a medical center and makes good money. will that be there? the local government is going to want their property taxes paid whether i'm working or not. will i lose my place that is paid for and all the preparations i've made due to not being able to work?

what about heat in the winter and for cooking? in short order folks will begin cutting down any tree they find for fire. there's so many of us that the trees are in serious danger. will my water storage be enough? if the neighbors decide to steal the food from my garden, how do i stop them? gotta sleep sometime. all my friends and family already know they are welcome to join us, but that is no guarantee they will. what about medical emergencies with no hospital or no way to pay for it? i'm in my mid fifties and they *will* crop up.

i know everything will work out in the end, but i've no desire to become a statistic in the meantime. how much planning can ye really do to prepare for the change everyone sees but no one can say how it will actually happen?

it's all well and good to set yerself up with garden, guns and the means to have heat and light. without other folks ye soon become less than human. and if ye are around other folks ye run the risks of theft and murder. i've opted for the middle ground of a small town, but as always there are no guarantees for anything.

You are right Ross. If TSHTF, a person alone may not do so well. There is power in numbers. My suggestion would be to start talking with like-minded individuals in your area. You know how to garden. THAT IS WORTH IT'S WEIGHT IN GOLD. I would suggest working towards putting away seeds and start learning how to sprout potatoes indoors with grow lights. Anything that can be grown fast and stored for a period of time can be bartered for availble cash in your area. Start buying solar panels w/inverters on Ebay. These also will be worth their weight in gold because they can be used to plug in a heater/cooler. If you do become jobless, loan out your share-cropping services in your area for half the harvest.

Re: I hate to give you more doom and gloom, but...
The problem is NOT OPEC. The problem is our stock market and a handful of speculators who are bankrupting the rest of us while they roll in the dough. I wonder if they have even considered that their money and gold will be worthless if everything falls. They have the farthest to fall. Some of them will jump out of their office windows when it goes down. I will be cheering them on. May they die paupers for what they are doing to us!

I posted an article yesterday that explains how investment firms and banks, are buying oil contracts TO HOLD, as the price goes up they can note it as collateral to cover their losses in CDO's. That's what's really going on. Oil contracts are going up because everyone is buying AND NO ONE IS SELLING. They need the figures to disguise their losses.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 461859

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Abdalla Salem el-Badri, secretary general of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, on Wednesday reiterated the cartel's position that record oil prices are mostly the fault of speculators. "70% of crude contracts on the Nymex are held by speculators...Some form of regulation is needed," el-Bradri said at the World Petroleum Congress in Madrid, according to press reports. Tighter regulation should apply not only for oil but other commodities, he said. "The market has no shortage of physical crude," said el-Badri, who added that supply is currently higher than demand.

Perhaps I'll go tend the garden...

Here's the bottom-line good people. Excepting Nuclear Armageddon or a Comet Strike - We are a very versatile and adaptable species.
Those that can adapt to changing conditions will survive, come what may. Those that can't will struggle.

There have been good folks who prospered at all times in human history.

There have been good folks that struggled at all times in human history.

Be prepared for tough times the best you can, and believe this, if your hanging out here and you are an adult, you are far better prepared than 99.99% of the sheep in the USA.

PS- DUNCAN? Tell me again why you dumped your K-Rands and why you felt compelled to announce it here?

cockroaches are an adaptable species that can overcome the nuclear holocaust easily
humans however are incredible vulnerable and not use dto selfsustainabillity at all!
I'd suggest you think again

Anybody get it yet, IT'S FUCKING OVER. The stuff on mainstream news now was only on those lunatic nut fringe kook shortwave radio shows a few years ago. Question is, are you going to sit around posting about it or actually do something to protect yourself and family. Damn, they are screaming it out over the rooftops everywhere.
Not sure what IT is but,'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.

Well, some of my colleagues and I (who used to be here a lot more until recently) have agreed that one of the highly ironic things about many of you is that, despite your gloom-'n'-doom outlook on things and your belief that Everything Is a Huge Sinister Plot, when a serious event like peak oil and the possibility (should I say probability?) of a major infrastructure collapse comes along, you're still either in denial or so busy worrying about "chem-trails" and Tesla and all that other meaningless crap that you're not doing a damn thing to look after yourselves.

Of course, there are those nasty old curmudgeonly types like Omega, GOG, SHR, and some others who are actually involved in preparing to care for themselves and their families. The rest of you, though, seem to be more interested in talking about stuff than doing anything constructive.

This is probably your last chance to get off your collective butts, quit making excuses about your helplessness, and start on a program to help you pull through what could be a very intersting couple of years.

Or, you could spend your time discussing the Mayan Calendar and the ascension to the next density.

Your call.

1. Bravo Duncan. I have been saying the same for awhile now, but usually to deaf ears.

2. Claycat, thank you

3. For those of you interested...
I have developed the following and am willing to give away the plans if you are interested. Please send me a pm with your email.
a) a water distiller that is solar, but more efficient than most solar ones out there
I know enough to know that I know nothing
