You see: I learned at a very EARLY age that money doesn't bring happiness but more frequently delivers avarice and its resulting misery.

I was openly Gay and the allure of the imagined "freedom" of San Francisco soon beckoned me; I lived there for ten years and it was during that decade [from the downfall of a coworker] that I fully realised the corruption that success can bring to a man. I moved from a comfortable apartment on lower Nob Hill to SF's notorious Tenderloin district- a haven for hookers, addicts and some of the most desperate people I was proud to call my friends. Still looking beyond a man's wallet and seeing his TRUE worth. These were people who may have had little, but they still CHERISHED their City, state and country and were proud to call themselves an American. I learned a great deal from their simple wisdom and will take it to my grave.

Bear in mind: I was still earning a very good wage while living in a one-room hovel. I spent my money as quickly as it arrived... on little of value. You see: I tried to keep myself as economically close to my friends as possible. SO: I've also known periods where I didn't know where my next meal was coming from and literally shared some crackers and one can of tuna with two other people as a dinner. You'll notice I still remember that poignant meal.

I returned to Wichita a much wiser man that when I had left 10 years earlier. I also arrived nearly penniless and moved into a notorious local 'transient' hotel [it has since seen urban renewal and was carved into condos that sell for $400,000]. Within a year, I was 'back on my feet' and managing a crew of 80 for a large car wash; I was still drawn to the destitute - again, these were good people with noble hearts who had been kicked down to the point where they thought they were only fit to wipe windshields. I made it my personal goal to raise their spirits once again and -more than once- went to bat for them against their Parole Officers, who only saw them as statistics.

Along the way, I also founded my own company [one of several] and again the cashflow increased. I still spent it casually with absolutely no intent of accumulation. And, I still prospered.

14 years ago I entered government service [the USPS] because I've always believed it is the duty of every single man to do so at least once in his life. Whether it's protecting our nation's security or it's forests, or it's waterways doesn't matter: what's most important is to give back some of what you receive in life.

Fast-forward to now. I'm semi-retired, living in a large townhouse. My health is excellent and I still have all the creature comforts I could want... and I STILL refuse to squirrel away money for some "rainy day." I prefer to create my own climate in life and have become a pretty good forcaster along the way.

A few words about those people that 'don't give a fuck about the 4th of July anymore': here in Wichita and the surrounding counties there was no evidence of apathy last night. For as far as the eye could see, the starry night sky was ablaze with the rocket's red glare and every other color imaginable. I have never in my life witnessed such a vast horizon of beauty and likely, never will again. Because those aerial shells were fired for some personal purpose; for some, it was probably just to out-glory their neighbors for others I'm certain those dazzling blasts reflected the true honor and joy they feel in their hearts to be an American. At least I sincerely hope so... since [from some of the responses posted on this timely thread] that type of patriot would seem to be vanishing from our great nation.
