they claim the 55mph speed limit would save an incredible amount of gas and human lives. It could prevent the need for rationing. I'm ok with it...

You will have to be OK with it in due time. But if youn were around when it was in effect in the 70's you know full well it will drive you bug-fucky on a long trip!

You've obviously never been through this before. I don't know how it will save lives when I'll be reading the newspaper as I drive because it is SOOOO fucking boring.

If we're worrying about saving gas and saving lives, why don't we just ban cars altogether. We can ride horses and bicycles and save even more lives and gasoline. How about that?

When they give you a speeding ticket for doing 60, just remember that it will count against you on your insurance also.

Re: Sen. Warner, Rep. Va. Proposes National 55MPH Speed LimitQuote

It may or may not save any more lives than doing 70 MPH, but you can bet your ass it will increase revenue for traffic violations (which is what they want anyway). Reminds me of those inane commercials with the hiway patrol officer/drone who says "55--It's a law we can live with" before jumping into his car and chasing someone doing 60 MPH.

Unless you get paid by the load or by the number of stops. Not everyone is trying to "chill" or enjoy the ride, some of us make a living by getting things from point "A" to point "B" and doing 55 MPH would cut deeply into our income. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate doing over 70, but 55 is just crazy.

What an incredible number of just plain ignorant posters on this thread.

Why don't you think of driving 55mph as a way that the average citizen can actually DO something patriotic. Much more effective than wearing a lapel pin BTW.

"I can't drive 55" sounds like Cheney saying the "American way of life is not negotiable".

Except it has to be.

If you want to waste gas send your son/daughter to Iraq to fight for it.

Otherwise STFU.

Do the math -- 20-30% LESS fuel cost makes up for the time discrepancy.

Your are an ass if you think slowing down a few mile per hour on the highway saves "20-30%" on fuel. It don't save shit.

By your reasoning we could all drive backwards and watch our gas tanks refill as we drive. You're an idiot and I'll run your butt off the road first chance.

Dear Ignorant Person,

Sending my children to Iraq does not correlate to any fuel savings by driving 55 MPH, and in case this info hasn't trickled down to you it's not a supply and demand issue, but a supply or not supply issue:

You found me out. I give up. Yes, you're right.
I just love going 55 mph in the right lane on the highway and see all those gas-guzzling hogs trying to go 70 in the right lane just so they think they are not being picked up on radar.
I see them seething behind me and I just turn the screws by going a little slower.
Some people jump off cliffs for a thrill. This is mine.

Peace, bro....

Hmmm...I wonder how many millions it will cost to change all the speed limit signs on the nation's freeways.

Who cares? We have money dripping from our rectums.

Crazy? Well how about 45 mph? I do that as the minimum in order to conserve fuel. BTW, before I modified my driving habits, I was paying twice a week at the pump. Now I fill up once every 8-10 days. Crazy? I don't think so.

Many years ago during the last time our country had a limit of 55 miles per hour I couldn't stand it, it drove me crazy; after having driven all my life at 70-73 M.P.H. I am glad I don't have to drive the freeways anymore, except in a very rare emergency.
