Tann your Own Hides...Make BOOTS, CLOTHES JACKETS .....WTSHTF
(I posted this on another thread and thought to start my own.)

Boots are easy with imagination...but remember you arn't trying to get a Mike Jordan endorsement....

RE: Tanning.

A secret recipe I learned in the mountains about tanning.

1) 5 gallon bucket water
2) 1 lb can of hay/rock salt
3) 1 lb can full of battery acid

Mix in 5 gal. bucket add hide. Stir a couple times a day.

1) rabbit/fox/squirrel/small game 5 days
2) Deer 8-10 days
3) mountain lion 10-12 days
4) cow/moose/bear/large game 12-15 days

Remember to stir/rotate daily (larger hides will take larger containers)

This recipe will allow the hair to remain on and the hide will be fully tanned/soft comparable to cloth/quilt and ready to sew into boots and clothing. (note: if you want the hair removed simply leave in mixture 1 day longer than recommended)

We use the brains of the animal, rubbed into the hide. Each animals brain is exactly the right amount to tan it...also when making boots, use pine pitch when rubberized paint isnt available to waterproof.
Any native american arts and cultural site will give directions.
If you dont want to make noise, use a snare, also at those sites.

i know this isn't funny but plastic never rots. get a pair of crocs with no holes, at least they will keep your feet of the ground....on a more serious note : i remember seeing ppl in 3rd world countries that were wearing sandals made with car tires for soles....they would never wear out either. just have to make a serviceable upper and you are all set

Thanks for the information. Raising sheep as I do, it would be a good thing to know how to cure the skins.

I have tanned rattlesnake skins for years with a Tandy Leather tanning preparation, but those skins are small and easy to work. Makes good hatbands.

There is also a recipe for tanning using your washing machine and uses Tide detergent and alum. Maybe I can find it again.

Great! I am physically unable to hunt, so the tanning recipes are of little use to me. Now tires I can run down ... if they're not rolling.

Years ago, and perhaps today still, there was a sandal shop in Key West that custom made sandals from tires. Tourists stood in line to have the outline of their barefoot marked on a piece of rubber, before the straps were sewn.

I thought you meant tan your own skin like that guy in the song:

"Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred
Tan me hide when I'm dead,
So he tanned his hide when he died Clyde,
And that's it hanging on the shed!
All together now ....

Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
Psa 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
Jer 6:2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate [woman].
STOCK UP NOW. You should have at least 6 months worth of basics for every member of your household. Stay away from crowds when trouble starts, do not forget water storage, tobacco is worth more than gold or silver, and be kind to hungry children.
