How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
Anyone care to share their experiences?

Will rolled coins from a local bank (in a busy city) contain any?

Not very.

The majority of these coins were culled out years ago.

I would think one in a thousand to be extremely optimistic.

Of course you can always try.

All thats left is the nickles, and they are rare. About 1 a month be me. Not worth messing with.

I've been checking my change for several years and have found ZERO. So now I spend my time saving copper pennies and nickels instead.

Here's the secret, go into a bank perferably one in a snaller town and buy $100 worth of halves and dollars (coins, not the new ones!) and search, the bank will love you as they hate storing them. The great thing it costs you nothing (Spend the reg. coins on gas or something you would anyway) The rewards can be awesome, my boys and I do this and we have found some great coins over the years

We handle a lot of coins through the convenience store, and find one occasionally. It really doesn't amount to even 1 in a thousand. There are very limited silver coins left out there unless junior gets in dads stash or something like that.

nickles ????

I bet if you find a large bunch they would have been stolen

I've heard store clerks will sometimes see very rare coins used by a stupid thief who doesn't know what they have

The pop machine wouldn't take my quarter and realized it was a silver quarter and I also have a silver dime that was in circulation. The silver quarter I think was accidently spent becuase it is in excellent condition. Maybe someones kid stole change of dads special place for candy.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
as a regular guy ive found 2 quarters in my life

my buddy handles the money for the resturaunt he manages and has found alot ....he recently found a $50 bill but didnt have $50 to buy it so it went with the rest of the cash for someone else to grab

i got lucky and found alot of silver at thrift stores....either flatware, hollow ware or jewelry

its sterling (925) and coins are 900 but it has the extra value of being something

good luck

I worked in the cash office for a retail chain for 6 years, and probably found fewer than a dozen in that time.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
those ripoff "coinstar"/coin counting machines at grocery stores reject silver and foreign coins as do toll boths(save up enough Canadian coins and then trade them in as they are worth more than our $ now). look in the reject slot of these machines. I get maybe 5-10 junk silver coins a year this way usually quarters and dimes. I did find a barely readable 1810 or so US dime coin book valued a few years ago at $14 or so, but those values are high anyway.

I just found a 1907 Liberty dime. It was a nice design but worn pretty thin by now.

I work in a bank and we get rolled coin by the box. I find, on average, 3 - 5 silver quarters or dimes per box. Some boxes contain more some none at all. Luckily the rolls within these boxes are clear plasic and you can see the silver coins among the clads. I just replace the silver coin I find with a clad coin from my pocket change. I've accumulated quite a nice silver stash over the past couple of years.

Wartime nickels (1942 through 1945 including all mints) contain 35 % silver because nickel was a critical war commodity. That's why they look more 'gunmetal' color than the (paradoxically) silvery color of regular issues.

Yeah war nickels are good too. I found a '43 but lost it. Just look for the "P" on them. They were orginally intended to be removed from circulation hence the easily identifiable "P".

Purchased approximately 130 lbs over the last two - three years from a local coin store. Most purchase for going rate minus 10%.

I stated when it was 9.00 an ounce. Wish I woke up to this years ago.

Once, I walked into a bank and purchase less than 10.00 which would retail for over 55.00 at the time.

Looking for more.....

I have been getting bank rolls and in $200 of nickels i have found 3, $80 in dimes yielded 3 silvers and in $400 quarters i didnt find one. :( But i am happy with my other finds. It is easy dont even bother to look at dates just hold 50 or so coins together and the clad sandwiches clearly have cu in them while the silver coins are a solid silver color. To look thru $80 in dimes it only took 15 min.
