Anyone care to share their experiences?

Will rolled coins from a local bank (in a busy city) contain any?

You should have tried this about 30 YEARS AGO , IN THE FIRST SILVER RUN !!!!!
I understand your enthusiasm but............

Recently I found silver half from local banks. One bank has $40 and I exchanged it. When I get home I found 12 silver half. 1 was 1964 Kennedy and 1 was 1962 half. The rest were from 1965 - 1969. After this I went few other banks and in 1 week I fount total of 45 silver halfs.

I am not sure if this is reliable or not. I suggest
frequenting a casino where they normally make change in
halves like craps or blackjack. Some dealers are nice
enough (with a little tip) to give you silver half-dollars.

In the past two weeks i have been able to exchange $100 for rolled dimes and found 6 silver dimes in that lot. They are still out there, you just need to be persistent.

If you're in retail in a doubtful neighborhood, you will see silver coins from time to time as the local thugs will steal someone's coin collection and not want to bother selling the cheaper pieces.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I have received a Silver Quarter in my change 3 times over the last 15years. Once was from a soda vending machine at my job. Once I cashed a check at my bank and as the teller put the change in my hand, I heard that familiar *ping*. The teller started to reach into my hand and I just closed it. He said "let me see". I pulled away, but showed him. He knew, I knew. He said, "looks like you have one there". You can bet he went through the rest of his change drawer as soon as I left ! The third time was just last August. I recognized it on sight. An uncirculated 1960 Silver Quarter. I'll bet some kid broke into Daddy's coin collection as it was definitly uncirculated. In the 1980s, I worked at a fast food place while in High School. I have at least 5 Silver Certificate $1 bills from the 1930s and a Red Letter $2 bill from those days. Kids would obviously raid Daddy's coin collection on their way to the mall. I was only too happy to exchange them for a newer one from my own wallet after they walked away. The Silver coins are worth the most naturally, but do not discount a kids ability to find ANY sort of loose change around the house and spend it back into circulation !!!

I gotten a few from cashier friends, they save them for me....one time there was a bunch of silver coins in a candy vending machine, I'm guessing a kid that got into their parent's stash....in a week there was about 2 rolls of dimes and a roll of quarters....

I actually found a lot of solid sterling silverware at the salvation army.....they had a huge bin full of flatware and I picked thru them when my wife is treasure hunting there....

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I work in a bank and we get rolled coin by the box. I find, on average, 3 - 5 silver quarters or dimes per box. Some boxes contain more some none at all. Luckily the rolls within these boxes are clear plasic and you can see the silver coins among the clads. I just replace the silver coin I find with a clad coin from my pocket change. I've accumulated quite a nice silver stash over the past couple of years.

for as little pay as they get working in the bank, I don't blame them. If you work in retail do you not also do the same thing?

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I live in a somewhat suburban area in Michigan.

I usually find one silver dime per 50 rolls.
I, without fail, find one war nickel per 40 rolls.
I usually find one silver half dollar per 30 rolls.
I usually find one wheat cent per 5 rolls.
I usually find 10-20 copper cents per roll.
I have not found a silver quarter or indian head cent yet.

Kennedy half dollars is your best bet. I search through 3000 coins and have found just about $40.00 in silver. I then return them back to the back and purchase more. All I do is lose time no other loss. I will admit that the silver is getting more difficult to fine . So good luck.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I had $125 in random change today and went through it meticulously out of curiosity. I found 1 silver quarter... I thought 1965 quarters and older were silver and I had ten of them...it turned out 9 of the quarters were 1965.... and it also turned out 1965 is not a silver quarter.... but out of my 10 one was silver.... so I'd say a good estimate would be for every 9 coins you find of every type and other date, you should fine one silver... meaning 9 coins of 1965 quarter, 9 of 1965 penny, 9 of 1965 dime and so on... but you have to include 9X 1966 of each and so forth... in the end, my estimation would be 9 x 4(for penny, dime, nickel, quarter) x 47 (years since 1965) and you'd end up with 1 out of 1,692. If my little sample size is indicative of the greater whole of change in the US, for every 1,692 coins you get, one would be silver. keep in mind a silver coin is only really worth around 5 bucks... so I wouldn't run out and gather change as a living! Also, I live in pennsylvania, so that might make a big difference since a mint is nearby....not sure why it would... but on average, there will be places with less silver in circulation and places with more... being close to a mint could increase or decrease your odds... not sure which one.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
an amendment to my post just now.... in 1965, if 2 x the quarters were minted than all other years, then you'd take my findings and divide them by two because I'd be twice as likely to find a 1965 quarter than all others... you'd have to adjust the final estimation by number of each coin minted each year to get a much more accurate estimation.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
You have to have a lot of patience and diligence to do it. Banks don't like half dollars and many will tell you they don't have any or give you strange looks if you ask for some. Tellers will tell you they see them once in awhile but not on a regular basis because their bank does not order them. Occasionally a customer will turn some in for whatever reason, so it pays to constantly ask tellers at different banks for them. If you can get some rolls of halves, you will find a few silver coins, probably one or two from every 5-10 rolls you seach through on average. I've found 5 or 6 over a period of about five months. Four of those came in one roll out of two searched. I not had much luck recently.

not too often. I have never found any in rolls from a bank, but on two separate occasions within days of one another I received a silver quarter in change from a local Walgreen's. I assume it was from the same roll. It occurred to me later that I should have gone back to that register and offered to buy all her quarters.

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I am not the lucky type, yet with my findings and that of my brother, aunt, and coworker,I have been given all those coins
that were found in change or tills.
List of coins pulled from circulation:4Roosevelts,1962D,
1962D,1952D,1964P, also1944D&1945S war nickels (my finds)
Next my brother's findings:1Roosevelt1964P,3Mercs,1941S,1943D,
1941P,and one Standing Liberty quarter.
My aunt found a 1964D quarter in her change, and after teaching
a co-worker how to i.d. silver coins she, Kelly Jones finds this 1964D and gives it to me.
So there are three silver quarters, two silver war nickels,
eight silver dimes. I use cash, and that is what you need to find silver coins,or i find them at work in the till.

I work in a restaurant and go thru all the change we get from the bank. So far i have found 4 quarters, and 10 dimes in 5 months of looking. Also a family member got really lucky and went a got 2 rolls of dimes for her weekly poker game and both rolls were nothing but silver mercury dimes. 300 bucks for doing nothing kinda nice

Re: How likely am I to find junk silver coins in circulation?
I ordered two boxes of Kennedy's from the FED last winter around Christmas time. All the silver had been removed from the forty or so rolls that I looked at. I believe that the folks who roll the coins are removing the silver. I certainly wouldn't waste your time ordering Kennedy's from the Fed.

Occasionally, I ask a bank teller if they have any silver, but I haven't been successful. It is likely that the teller's themselves are making off with the occasional remitted 40% or 90%.

Happy hunting.
