Alaska volcano erupts, flings ash 30,000 feet high

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A volcano has erupted with little warning on an island in Alaska, sending an ash cloud at least 30,000 feet high.

The Okmok Caldera erupted late Saturday morning. Seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Center detected a series of small tremors hours before.

Okmok is located on one of Alaska's Aleutian Islands, 60 miles west of the busy fishing port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island.

Jerry Lucas, a spokesman for PenAir, the primary airliner serving the area, says two planned flights from Unalaska were canceled in response to the eruption.

Geophysicist Steve McNutt says the 3,500-foot volcano last erupted in 1997. He says the volcano has shown signs of increased activity during the last few months

Now we know why all those earthquakes were happening....

AVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Okmok (CAVW #1101-29-)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING

Current Aviation Color Code: RED

Issued: Saturday, July 12, 2008, 4:02 PM AKDT (20080712/0002Z)
Source: Alaska Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2008/A7
Location: N 53 deg 23 min W 168 deg 9 min
Elevation: 3520 ft (1073 m)
Area: Aleutians Alaska

Volcanic Activity Summary: A strong explosive eruption began at approximately 1943 Z (11:43 AM ADT) and continues at this time based on high levels of seismicity recorded on the AVO seismic network. The ash cloud may be reaching in excess of 35,000 feet above sea level and is moving generally east and southeast from the volcano. Ash fall has been reported on eastern Umnak Island and in Dutch Harbor.

Recent Observations:
[Volcanic cloud height] The ash cloud is reaching in excess of 35,000 ft above sea level. Light winds appear to be carrying the ash cloud to the east and southeast at this time.
[Ash fall] Ash fall was reported soon after the eruption onset at Fort Glenn 7 miles southeast of the volcano. Ash fall has also begun at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska. We have no information on the amount of ash that has fallen.
[Other observations] US Coast Guard aircraft are in the area and have been asked to report any visual observations of the eruption.

Hazard Analysis:
[General hazards] Ash fall is expected to continue downwind of the volcano including over marine areas in the North Pacific. Areas in the immediate vicinity of the volcano on Umnak Island should be avoided, particularly the Crater Creek drainage northeast of the caldera.
[Ash cloud] An ash cloud is drifting east and southeast of the volcano and poses a risk to aircraft in the vicinity. At this time, we estimate the ash cloud to possibly reach 35,000 feet above sea level.
[Ballistics] Ballistics may impact the areas around the caldera rim.
[Lava flow/dome] Historical eruptions of Okmok have typically produced lava flows, however at this time we cannot confirm that a lava flow has been produced.

Remarks: Okmok Volcano is located on the northeast end of Umnak Island in the eastern Aleutians about 65 miles southwest of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor. The volcano consists of a 6-mile-wide circular caldera or crater about 1600 feet deep that formed about 2000 years ago. Okmok has been frequently active in historical times producing ash clouds often accompanied by lava flows within the caldera. The most recent eruption occurred in 1997 and produced ash clouds and a lava flow that traveled about 5 miles across the caldera floor.

Ummm, the word caldera does not indicate Super Volcano. Most pyrochlastic explosions create a caldera.

Excellent catch CHLuke...

Oh.. the swarm you spotted a few days ago... over 800 mile away. Nothing to do with this specific spot and volcano... but, there have been pretty good ones there recently. I think that there was a Mw5 there not log ago... and yes, the activity did increase in the specific area recently...

Actually there are 2 definitions geologically for "caldera"

Caldera is the big hole in a volcano when it goes boom. And Rhyolite Caldera is actually a volcano type (like strato is another... etc...)

Super volcano is a term (barely) saved for defining just a really big volcano, like Toba, Yellowstone, etc... It is based upon previous eruption history and limits of ash fall, bomb fall, magma, etc... it also suggests magma chamber size.

Want any links for full explanation?

The 70kyr ago would be Yellowstone, likely... though that was a small burp for it.

Hey! I consider it a good day when I learn something new. I love learning!

Being "wrong" in this sense, it's more of a misunderstanding or not enough info... this kind of understanding I run into a lot. VERY few geologists are volcanologists... some just have a passion for volcanoes, even if they enjoy other parts of geology better... me for instance. I'm not a volcanologist, I'm more a structural geologist.

I dislike ever being mean to anyone (who doesn't deserve it). Misunderstanding something never deserves meanness. I more often than not try to joke of tease if someone is getting weird or mean. If I can use what I know to help others, the more the better.
