Do you work in this field? That's pretty neat stuff. I have a few questions that maybe you might know.
Yep. I can answer you as best I know.
But, instead of asking them here and high-jacking CHLukes thread... I have a thread open to anything you want to ask.

My questions to you now are in that thread about when is PX coming. a few days ago. It looks like you visited and even corrected my yellowstone cycle of 250k - 300k year eruptions comment. lol. I'm sure you would have added anything you thought you needed to add. So I'm not gonna post on your thread. But believe you me, I'm going there next time I have a question.
Im sorry for high-jacking your thread spiderman with a squirrel humping your head. |

That depends on how much ash is being sent up there, and again how much eruptable magma is down there.

What matters a lots in addition, is how much SO2 is being sent up. Sulfur Dioxide is a big "cooling" agent within the ash mixture. It is usually also a small percentage of the ash mixture. |

The last super volcano that went off was 70,000 years ago.
I believed that all calderas were super volcanoes. I may be wrong. I ain't no volcanologist that's for sure.
The 70kyr ago would be Yellowstone, likely... though that was a small burp for it.
Hey! I consider it a good day when I learn something new. I love learning!
Being "wrong" in this sense, it's more of a misunderstanding or not enough info... this kind of understanding I run into a lot. VERY few geologists are volcanologists... some just have a passion for volcanoes, even if they enjoy other parts of geology better... me for instance. I'm not a volcanologist, I'm more a structural geologist. Quoting: Geogal
Strictly speaking the last "Super Eruption" was Lake Taupo 26,000 years ago. Ejecting 1,170 km3 of crap :)
Before that was Toba 75,000 years ago ejecting 2,800 km3
The largest known eruption La Garita Caldera in the US ejected 5,000 km3 some 27million years ago.
Anything that reaches 7-8 on the VEI is usually considered a "Super Eruption" by us normal non sciency folk :) Cheers.

The eruption at Okmok continues based on high levels of seismicity and ash continues to be erupted as indicated in satellite observations. Seismicity reached a peak at about 2200 Z (2:00 PM ADT) yesterday and has been gradually declining since. Reports from Unalaska indicate no ash fall in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor since last night. However, as of 0730 ADT the ash fall advisory for Nikolski and Unalaska/Dutch Harbor remains in effect.

 | | Re: Volcano erupts in Alaska | Quote | Update from Okmok
At this time, based on AVO analysis of satellite data, ash is
continuing to erupt from a composite cinder and spatter cone called
Cone D in the eastern portion of the 6-mile wide caldera or crater of
Okmok. It appears that the eruption is very water-rich due to
interaction of rising magma with very shallow groundwater and
surficial water inside the caldera. We have few direct observations
into the caldera and details of the current event remain unknown.
The current activity differs in character from the past three
significant eruptions at Okmok in 1945, 1958, and 1997. All of these
eruptions occurred at a cinder and spatter cone on the far western
portion of the caldera floor, Cone A. In general, each eruption was
mildly to moderately explosive with most ash clouds produced rising
less than 30,000 ft above sea level. Each eruption also produced a
lava flow that traveled about 5 miles across the caldera floor.
Based on past eruptions at Okmok and our analysis of the current
episode of activity, we would expect this event to continue for
several weeks and possibly longer. The position of the vent in the
eastern caldera adjacent to a shallow lake suggests that water will
continue to play a role in increasing the explosivity of the eruption
resulting in significant ash and steam production. If the eruption
follows patterns of previous Okmok events, lava will eventually reach
the surface to form lava fountains, spatter accumulations, and
possibly a lava flow. It is also possible that explosivity could
intensify at any time.

The Okmok Caldera erupted late Saturday morning.
Keyword here. How many is that this year so far? For these super volcanoes waking up again.
Curious... where do you get "caldera" means "super volcano" from?
Why, Is a super volcano something else? Yellowstone is a super volcano. I don't know I think I picked the term of when them elk or animals were found dead there a few years back and all that hype started.
Calderas are not your regular average volcano. Not even close.
Actually there are 2 definitions geologically for "caldera"
Caldera is the big hole in a volcano when it goes boom. And Rhyolite Caldera is actually a volcano type (like strato is another... etc...)
Super volcano is a term (barely) saved for defining just a really big volcano, like Toba, Yellowstone, etc... It is based upon previous eruption history and limits of ash fall, bomb fall, magma, etc... it also suggests magma chamber size.

 ity for any updates.
Last I heard was the eruption plume reached about 45,000 feet above sea level. Quoting: OxygenX
hrmm that's interesting... a release from yesterday that I've got on my "volcano" thread says 50, 000 feet, but was calming down, but todays release says
"AVO monitors Cleveland Volcano with satellite imagery as weather allows. The lack of a real-time seismic network at Cleveland means that AVO is unable to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. Short-lived explosions of ash that could exceed 20,000 ft above sea level can occur without warning and may go undetected on satellite imagery. Please see [link to www.avo.alaska.edu]
So, it apparently isn't actually calming like they thought/hoped, but is still sending out the occasional burp. Woman of white garment, foreign woman, earth-eating woman, taking and giving life, she is Pele

It's not super sized. (pun intended)
It is a pretty good sized one, though. But, it doesn't mean that it's going to blow that much of a stack again any time soon. As far as I can tell from photos and descriptions of this one, another cone has not been building (like Krakataua or St Helens) which would have been a sign of potentially going boom. Part of the reason that there was only about 1.5 hours warning to this one. Also, something about 90% of the ash plume is water. This means very little silica, SO2, CO2, and other gases and gunk is heading up into the atmosphere... we'll see truly what's to expect when it's over or when a release about the amounts is made.

I absolutely LOVE what I do... I get a big kick out of it, mentally. The questions start with the "rainbow" clouds people see and freak about, pointing to Sichuan EQ, know which ones I'm taking about? From what I've studied about EQ clouds, they don't come close to the proper patterns... so, this Q is 2 fold...
1. Have you seen EQ clouds?
one example (really big but sized bigger for larger EQ's, only appear for Mw5.5+ normally if at all, head to tail following the fault with the tail "pointing" towards the epicenter)

and
2. The "rainbow" clouds, I've read that they actually have a name (well actually a few possible ones), but can't for the life of me remember it... but the basic theory seems to be ice crystals with the sunlight refracting through jsut right. Know what I';m talking about?
here's a good example of one
