Reality check on Iran's military
Quote

Bush and his lunatic Israeli buddies don't want to destroy Iran because they're afraid. They want to destroy Iran because they can.

The United States is spending $623 billion this year on war machines and the personnel to man them.

Israel is spending $9.4 billion, not counting freebies from Uncle Sam and the American taxpayers.

Iran is spending $4.3 billion. Less than half what the zionists are spending, and around 7% of what Bush is pissing away on death machines.

So who is the biggest threat to peace here?

Reality check on Iran's military

BY ERIC MARGOLIS (American Angle)
14 July 2008

THE intensifying sabre-rattling and war of words between the US and Israel, on one hand, and Iran have generated a great deal of hysteria, war fever and confusion.

Senior Israeli cabinet members have threatened nuclear war against Iran. The western media has given the erroneous impression that Iran is poised to wipe Israel off the map. Some understanding of the military issues involved is badly needed.

First, missiles. Iran announced its Shahab-III missile is ready to retaliate against any Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. This missile is not long-ranged, as media wrongly claims, but a medium-ranged one. Iran says it can deliver a two-tonne warhead over 2,000 km. But Israeli and US sources say Shahab's maximum range is around 1,200 km, which puts much of Israel out of its range.

This obsolescent missile is highly inaccurate, particularly at maximum range. It is liquid fuelled, meaning it is very vulnerable to air and missile strikes while being prepared to fire. Israel has developed tactics using aircraft, missiles and drones to attack enemy missiles in pre-launch phase. Iran has an estimated 24 Shabab-III's.

The other missiles Iran fired this week were short ranged models of no strategic value. Teheran was even caught doctoring the pictures it issued of the multiple missile launch to cover up the failure of one of the missiles to fly. This embarrassment reinforced the view that Teheran is trying to hide its military weakness behind a lot of chest-pounding and missile theatrics.

Israel, by contrast, has around 50 Jericho-II nuclear-armed missiles with a range from 900-2,700 miles, putting every Mideast capital and parts of Russia, Pakistan, and Europe within range. Each Jericho-II carries a warhead that can destroy a major city.

Medium-ranged missiles are almost useless without nuclear warheads. Iran has no nuclear weapons, and even if it did manage to develop them, it would be many years before a compact warhead could be developed that could be carried atop a missiles and withstand heavy G-forces. Until Iran has nuclear warheads, Iran's Shabab's will be more for show than military utility.

Israel has an indestructible nuclear triad. In addition to the Jerichos, which are housed in caves and mobile, Israel has one of the world's top air forces with long-ranged US-supplied F-15's and F-16's that can deliver nuclear weapons to Iran.

Germany provided Israel with three Dolphin-class subs that are said to be armed with nuclear cruise missiles. At least one sub is always on station off Iran's coast. In addition, Israel new Ofek-3 military satellite provides full coverage of Iran and surrounding region. Israel also shares US satellite and other sensor data in real time.

Israel has probably the world's second or third most potent air force, with around 400 state of the art, US-supplied combat aircraft and among the world's most skilled pilots. The IAF is supported by a galaxy of electronic warfare systems, drones, and long-range recon. Israel's Arrow is the world's most advanced operational anti-ballistic missiles system and is expected to down over 85 per cent of any incoming missiles.

Why let some facts get in the way of war? Why would we build all these weapons if we were going to be responsible and not use them? The mouthbreathers who think all this military hardware is good think it's even better if we get to use it.

Good point, I suppose.

A $5 billion aircraft carrier isn't any more useful than a 500 foot tall statue of the Pillsbury Doughboy if you never use it to murder anybody.

There are a lot of gaps in Western intelligence about what Iran exactly has in its arsenal. For Iran, why would they want to waste their precious missile weapons in a dummy test run, keep the limited stock of the good stuff for when they need it.

Also I believe that Iran actually already has some nuclear warheads, courtesy of the black market when the USSR fell in the early 1990's.

Eventually - because the Ahmadinejad/mullah regime is the one of the world's worst governments - right up there with NK and Burma. And they will not go quietly - but they will go. I'm sure the average Iranian does NOT share Ringo's wet dream..

Re: Reality check on Iran's militaryQuote

Assuming the facts in the original post are true and the source seems to have a good grasp of the Israeli armory then the leadership of Iran's response is absolutely incomprehensible. You don't rationally play a stud pokerhand with a pair of deuces when you know the guy across from you is sitting there with a full house and keeps upping the bet. This simply lends credence to my earlier posts that the Ayatollahs and Achmedinehit are religious zealot nut cases. They don't care what happens to the people of Iran or Muslims in general their goal is to bring about the coming of the 12th Mahdi which is an end of days scenario apparently in the Koran. The story is to wierd to annunciate it here but the fact that large sums of money are being spent on the area whence the Mahdi is supposed to return to perhaps allows for some insight.

The other possibility is the control of the 2 or so billion Muslims worldwide which might dictate major risk taking but not the type apparent here. These people have in terms of peaceful use of nuclear energy with what they have been offered by the Western powers and their supposed ally Russia in the provision of low level nuclear material for civilian reactors. And I don't want to hear again the arguments that they want to make their own/ they have a right to do so etc. Those arguments are purely academic in the face of the current situation and carry no weight in this arena. I also do not want the arguments re they can't deliver on their threats I fully believe the author has an excellent grasp of the Israeli arsenal but only a limited knowledge of what Iran may or may not be able to do. The last time I looked Iran had not published either figures nor will they do so.

I also cannot believe that after Saddam's , miscalculation as to what or whatnot would happen by following the path he did that these people could be quite that stupid. Assuming that they are not stupid one has to seek out other motives. I doubt the great majority of Iranian's are in agreement with their leaders posturing. They may have been earlier but it is time for them to step up and tell their leaders to become rational. Afterall there are only 25 M or so Iranians effected by this and taking into consideration the fact that they vastly outnumber the lunatics the time has never been better.

Last but not least the author assumes that either the US or Israel would use nuclear weapons. That is a presumption which is not supported by the facts. Both Israel and the US have very sophisticated non nuclear weaponry capable of destroying Iran's nuclear capability many times over if necessary by the authors own admission. Thus the hysteria about the use of nuclear weapons appears to be unfounded. I would think that such a scenario would be better suited to the underdog in this case should they ever achieve nuclear weaponry.
