The link shows for today that there are 13 quakes in CA. Is that an unusually high number?

Do the lists of eqs indicate increased magnitude, or number? The link shows for today that there are 13 quakes in CA. Is that an unusually high number?

Actually the USGS site shows 473 quakes in a week's time for California, and that is not unusual at all. We are always jiggling a bit. Even in the northern part of the state gets frequent, but usually small quakes. There was a series of about 10 microquakes just a few miles from my house, recently. It was an unusual occurrence. Looked a whole lot like rock quarry blasts, which we see to the north of us weekly, but there is no quarry where the series was located.
Many earthquake sensitives have been concerned for a big one to hit California for some time.
Always good to be prepared. And this does seem a time of upheaval all over. |

Short-Term Prediction
Short-term predication involves monitoring of processes that occur in the vicinity of earthquake prone faults for activity that signify a coming earthquake.
Anomalous events or processes that may precede an earthquake are called precursor events and might signal a coming earthquake.

The San Andreas fault is NOT a single, continuous fault, but rather is actually a fault zone made up of many segments. Movement may occur along any of the many fault segments along the zone at any time. The San Andreas fault system is more that 1300 km (800 miles) long, and in some spots is as much as 16 km (10 miles) deep.
The average rate of motion across the San Andreas Fault Zone during the past 3 million years is 56 mm/yr (2 in/yr). This is about the same rate at which your fingernails grow.
It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage.
Each year the southern California area has about 10,000 earthquakes. Most of them are so small that they are not felt. Only several hundred are greater than magnitude 3.0, and only about 15-20 are greater than magnitude 4.0.
The majority of the earthquakes occur along plate boundaries such as the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American plate.
Q: Can we predict earthquakes?
A: Based on scientific data, probabilities can be calculated for potential future earthquakes. For example, scientists estimate that over the next 30 years the probability of a major EQ occurring in the San Francisco Bay area is 67% and 60% in Southern California.
