Re: Common Conspiracy FallaciesQuote

I am working on a conspiracy theory that might explain the repeated disappearance of dental floss from my bathroom. Sometimes it is half a roll and others it's the whole roll and case. It started in Feb this year and there seems to be a time pattern present. When and if I bust this open I'm going straight to the media.

"Just because someone famous says something is true, that doesn’t mean it is. Mel Gibson is a great movie director, but he’s not a holocaust expert. (Appeal to Authority)"

Exactly and just because George W Bush said there WMD in Iraq didn't make it true and just because he said Bin Laden was behind the WTC attack doesn't make that true either. (Shot yourself in the foot on that one).
-------------------------------------------

"Just because something happened after another event or in association with another event that does not mean that one thing caused the other. UFOs began to appear at about the time that televisions became popular. That does not mean that televisions cause UFOs. (Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc)."

I think if you do a little bit of research you will find that UFO's have been reported for thousands of years. Whether they really exist is another question, but you really need to find another example of 'Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc'.
---------------------------------------------

"The fact that someone or some group benefits from an event does not mean that they conspired to cause the event. Lyndon Johnson benefitted from the assassination of John F. Kennedy. That does not mean that he conspired to cause it. (Argument from Benefit)."

Nor does it mean he didn't conspire to cause it.
----------------------------------------------

"That an organization holds secret meetings, has a secret membership list or is joined by invitation only does not make it a conspiracy. Country clubs and sororities are not conspiracies."

Really, can you prove that? After all you want to talk logic. You don't know what is going on behind closed doors, ergo, logically you cannot claim that a conspiracy isn't taking place.
-----------------------------------------------

"When two or more famous or influential people meet together that doesn’t mean they’re hatching a plot or launching a conspiracy."

And this is true in all cases? Prove it.
-----------------------------------------------

"There really are powerful groups that have agendas and want to influence events in the world. They are almost always proud of their agenda, state it publicly and think it is a good thing, even if you disagree. The Council on Foreign Relations has an agenda, but it’s not secret and it’s got nothing to do with uniting all of North America into a single nation. Conspiracies generally don’t have websites, magazines and PR departments."

Oh, please tell me you are not that naive. Public face and private face are very often very different and contradictory.
--------------------------------------------------

That's about all I can be bothered to address. Just one thing, just because you've created this 'list' does not make you any cleverer than anybody else. You just like to show off and you do it very badly. You need more practice.

Saying that 'just because 'A' doesn't mean 'B' is really quite pathetic. Unless you have all the facts you can't draw any conclusions. In other words you are falling into the same pit as the people you are haughtily denigrating.

Anybody can make a valid argument but unless you have the truth then it's just that, a valid argument, and VALIDITY DOES NOT PRESUPPOSE TRUTH. And that works both sides of the argument.

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
