Bob Dylan is very good at speaking as if it were writing. He's making a parallel. He did a lot of stimulants, and in this interview personifies them as the devil. This isn't a religious thing.

He's saying that he sold his health to think and write the way he does.

It's not literal.

Ah, this all may be true. But Bob Dylan has never owned up to actually experiencing what he writes about...and he tends to change the lyrics (and thus the meaning of songs) seemingly to suit his mood. He once even stated that he had severed all ties with his family and hasn't spoken to them in years. This is also hogwash, which anyone living in the vicinity of his family "up north" knows. He visits frequently, and even has a cabin he stays at with his brother when they go on fishing trips. He's Bobby Zimmerman, from Duluth. Period.

I think the world would be better off if we could all just accept that we don't know the man at all, and he likes it that way. He is playing the character "Bob Dylan".

After reading all the comments..I have my doubts...since there are several things to consider:
1. Did they indeed edit the video to make it look like he sold his soul to the devil?
2, The year and dates of when he became a follower of Christ, or when he sold his soul to the devil are not clearly abstracted;
3. Would a man as wise and knowledgeable as Bob Dylan commit a lossing bargain for his soul? I doubt it..as he said in his songs, "I got the heart you (Jesus) got the blood, we cut through iron and cut through mud...strangers they meddle with our affair...and I'm still carrying the gift You gave, its part of me now, it is cherished and saved..and it will be with unto the grave..and then unto ETERNITY...and what you given me for a day is worth more than I could pay, and no matter what they say I believe in You (OF COURSE REFERRING TO JESUS CHRIST)...

So would Bob Dylan buy a 100 earth years to wail forever or gnash his teeth in the end?Would he exchange ETERNITY for a TOY?

Agree with both. Read his autobiography. He has a conversation with a guy in rural Louisiana, and the guy asks him if he prays. He says yes. Guy asks what he prays for, Bob says "I pray that I will be a nicer person."

Says it all. By the way, there is no doubt in my mind that his prayers were answered.
