As landfall nears, Hurricane Dolly is strengthening and is now packing maximum sustained winds of 100 mph; a category two hurricane.
With its slow movement over the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Dolly remains just barely offshore allowing it to further intensify this morning. The center of Dolly's eyewall is expected to make landfall near S. Padre Island early this afternoon.
As of 10 a.m. CDT, the center of Hurricane Dolly was located about 30 miles east-northeast of Brownsville, Texas. Dolly has slowed even more; moving to the northwest at just 7 mph. The storm's pressure, measured by the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance plane, has now fallen to 964 mb.
Nasty squalls of tropical downpours and tropical storm-force winds from Hurricane Dolly are now rotating onshore along the far South Texas coastline. This is just the beginning and conditions will only continue to deteriorate this morning as Dolly's center of circulation approaches.
The western core of Hurricane Dolly, where the most intense winds and rainfall is located, is currently reaching the coastline.
Hurricane-force winds and lashing rainfall is and will be experienced by the Brownsville area, including S. Padre Island and Port Isabel, and in neighboring parts of Mexico through the morning hours and into the early afternoon.
A 72 mph wind gust was measured earlier this morning at Port Isabel, Texas. An unofficial observer east of Matamoros, Mexico has recorded winds of 65 mph with gusts to 119 mph.
Waves are growing in height (generally 10 to 20 feet) this morning as Dolly makes landfall; crashing and punishing the shoreline. With Dolly's stubborn movement, severe beach erosion is becoming a major concern.
The expected storm surge, from Corpus Christi south to South Padre Island, is forecast to range from 3 to 5 feet.
The intense winds of Dolly will be damaging and in some cases destructive. Power outages and structural damage are likely especially for poorly-constructed houses and buildings. However, because of the very slow forward movement of Dolly, it is quite possible that the most life-threatening impact from Dolly will be the flooding rainfall.
Forecast amounts are expected to be in the 6 to 12 inch range in locations south of Corpus Christi through Brownsville and into northern Mexico. A few spots, especially in the northern Mexican mountains, could get as much as 15 inches. Flooding is almost a guarantee for several locations impacted by Dolly.
Hurricane warnings are in effect from Rio San Fernando in Mexico northward to Corpus Christi, Texas. Tropical storm warnings surround the hurricane warning area, with tropical storm warnings in effect in Mexico between Le Pesca and Rio San Fernando (where a hurricane watch is also in effect), and between Corpus Christi and Port O'Connor, Texas.
If you live in or are visiting a beach area of south Texas, heed the advice of local officials with regard to evacuations. Preparations for tropical storm force and hurricane force winds along with flooding rains should already be complete.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a well-developed tropical low, that emerged from the African coast just east of the Cape Verde Islands, is being monitored. The low has the potential for further development as it moves westward over the next couple of days.
Cristobal has become extratropical and weakening in the north Atlantic.
In the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Genevieve has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. Genevieve is located 415 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is expected to very gradually strengthen today as it moves to the west. It may reach minimal hurricane strength later today orThursday as it churns just south of cooler water churned up by former Hurricane Fausto. It is also projected to hit Corpus Christi- The translation from Latin of the city's name is Body of Christ, given to the settlement by the Spanish, in honor of the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist). The city has been nicknamed The Sparkling City by the Sea. |

I live in Canada, we have legalized gay marriage and did so a few years back and I don't see any raid of fire or tornadoes. As a mater of fact we get less shit then America, guess your god just likes us better eh? |

Can someone help with this??!!!
I have been looking since last night for DETAILS if Rio Grande levees break from Dolly. Such as scenarios, etc.
I can't find anything for that - there is alot of articles today on google (not many yesterday) that discuss that levees breaking is a concern, but no actual details such as where flooding would occur, approx. height, etc.
I found pic from 1967 where Harligen flooded from break in Mercedes.
Like for Tampa Bay area they have scenarios to view based on category of storm where exactly and high high waters would be..
I have elderly family that retired there, so is why I am trying to find.
Any help would be most appreciated!! |

Hey whatever happened to those people in houston who recieved messages of a major huricane in Sept.? Thought they might be mistaken and it was this one heading in, but I guess not. I had to just remind my son, the season isn't over till November now. It used to be over, here, in Aug. |
