Anonymous Coward User ID: 456634 United Kingdom 07/23/2008 03:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | .iso is file type usually containing data for optical discs. It's commonly called an 'image' file. You will need to record or in other words 'burn' the .iso onto an optical disc using a 'writable' optical drive. I personally use Nero (not free) for all of my media handling projects to burn things. I do not know whether Vista has 'burning' capabilities off-hand. But, I just googled a freeware program which should suffice if you're out of options. [link to cdburnerxp.se] That will burn your image. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 464327 United States 07/23/2008 04:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ok download image burn(freeware) far superior to most programs including nero. download the Linux .iso of choice. Insert your cd if the file is under 700mb. If you downloaded a DVD .iso size distro, then of course you will need a blank dvd. Open image burn point it towards the file, and burn the distro on slow speed. 2x or 4x no faster, or you will have problems with the live cd, trust me. check this link for info on getting into various BIOS settings [link to www.mepis.org] once in bios you will go to BOOT ORDER or whatever it's called in your bios, using the indicated keys to change your optical drive to first boot device. some bios's have a key like F6 that will take you into a boot menu outside of the bios itself to allow booting from a device. if your having this much trouble with even getting the live cd to run, then your going to have more problems using linux. |

A Concerned Canadian User ID: 465589 Canada 07/23/2008 04:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | my apologies, i have burnt it, but how to open and with what application. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 465868Reboot your computer from the cd rom with the disc in place. If you have no idea about that wait till you try and install Linux! ITs easy to install. Try PCLOS Gnome 2008. It took 5 clicks and 10 min to install. They put special attention in the install part with this linux version. The partitions are /(root) /home and /swap. It will automatically make them for you now. You just need to define how big you want them if you dont like the default sizes. My gnome runs off 12g on a 160g drive with duel boot. Its wayyyyy easier these days. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 430584 Canada 07/23/2008 04:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | a) make sure you dont just copy the .iso file onto a cd, you have to burn image from iso (which will get you a bunch of files) b) when your computer first turns on, there should be something that says press DEL or F10 or something like that for bios.. bios is not DOS, its way before DOS.. you should end up in a blue colored menu (usually blue). There will be an option somewhere for boot order. Make sure you dont change anything else unless you know what you are doing. You may or may not get a notice to "press any key to boot from cd" after you tell your bios to boot cd first and save/reboot.. make sure you do so or it will just skip the cd and boot your hard drive Also as mentioned ubuntu makes for a much better initial entry point into the linux world. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 411199 United States 07/23/2008 05:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | To use your LiveCD you'll leave in your DVD player and reboot your computer. During the bootup you'll watch the screen and when it says something like "To enter BIOS press the delete button", then you press the delete button. It might some other button but like Esc but usually its the Del key. Then you'll see your BIOS appear onscreen. Look for the bootup options. It'll have a menu for you to boot from the harddrive, CD, floppy, etc. Obviously you'll select boot from CD (which will also work for your DVD player, or it might also say boot from DVD). Then select save and exit. When your computer reboots it'll read the LiveCD and boot you into Linux Welcome to computer paradise |

Don't listen to the other 'tards on this thread - live CDs are great. You can try out an OS without installing it first. If you like it you can install it from the CD. Changing your BIOS setting is very safe and easy. You just change the bootup sequence using the information given you onscreen. Usually the default bootup sequence is 1. Floppy Drive 2. HD0 <-- that means Harddrive Zero, or the first hard drive in your computer with partition 'C' on it, the place where your OS usually goes 3. CD or DVD so you'll change the bootup sequence to 1 CD or DVD 2 Floppy 3 HD0 later if you want to change back to how it was you can bump up Harddrive Zero to 2 or 1 again. |

Get Ubuntu - although it might seem intimidating at first, it is actually not difficult to learn and there is a plethora of support available. Installing Ubuntu is easy and is completely menu driven. The future of computing is open source. Ubuntu, OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, GIMP... they are ALL better and more stable than their Microsoft counterparts... and they are all FREE!
