I have a 50 mile drive home from Austin to Lake Bastrop. Traffic down somewhat, people driving much slower, semi's driving 55-60pmh. They used to do 70+.

Yeah, I live in Austin too. I'm a musician, and I've really noticed that late night on 35 there's a lot less people out. And the toll roads seem to have tapered off as well.

Mopac's quiet too, but UT's out and so are the other schools. You just forgot that it's summer.

Wait until after Labor Day. Traffic will be bad again.

Don't want to sound like a "sun is too far north" debunker, but this is definately normal.

I've noticed it in rural North Ga. and the north perimeter of hotlanta starting a month ago. It's happening. I saw worse during the 70's oil embargo, BUT, there were far fewer cars on the road.

People, this phenomenon, this time around, just may be ONE of the early precursors to the "big culling" some have been talkin about for quite a while now.

I hope not, maybe it's all eventually going to "come back" good as ever.

No discernible difference here in Central Jersey. At least from what I can tell. Folks are still doing 80+ on the Turnpike and Parkway and speeding like hell away from a green light.

DFW here,
Traffic still sucks. The idiots who used to drive 85 in bumper to bumper now drive 55 bumper to bumper.
But then again people in DFW CANNOT DRIVE FOR SHIT.

I have never lived in a place where the drivers seem to have gotten their licenses from a vending machine. It is funny, when we drive through Arkansas, EVERY car that is STUCK in the passing lane has a ... TEXAS license plate on it.

I travel through Orange County, Ca, pretty much every day and it is still packed to the max. The only difference being that people are driving a lot slower.

Re: What is the TRAFFIC like in your area? Ghost Town Freeways?Quote

I'd like to get the truth from people in different areas about how the traffic conditions have changed lately.

I live in San Diego, and things have changed drastically.

I've lived here and driven on the major freeways I-5 & I-805 during "peak" hours for the last ten years. In the past for example, driving from North County SD South on the I-5 anytime between 8 AM-11AM meant serious gridlock. It would be stop and go.. averaging about 10 mph.

For the last month everything has changed. I drive the same freeways I always have, and it is almost empty much of the time. On my southbound drive, which I used to dread, I am going on four straight work weeks without having to slow down below 55.

Very strange.

Do people think these changes have to do with --

1) People using more public transportation
2) Carpooling
3) Only driving when absolutely necessary
4) Real Unemployment numbers are much much higher than reported

I see it as a combination of all... but I seriously suspect and worry that #4 is the main reason.
 Quoting: Calibob

Possibly the ascension has happened. Those people who would normally be out there buzzing the freeways have been snatched up by God, cars and all. They're up in heaven now, causing traffic jams on the Streets of Gold.

I've noticed some reduction in traffic, too, here in western Oregon.

Lots of great responses from everyone! I particularly like the Ascension Explanation hf

I'll write some responses to many of you tomorrow, but now its late, and I would bet no matter where anyone lives, the highways are free and clear out there tonight.

Thanks to everyone for your shout-outs from your areas. We'll watch this.

Its tappered down. Especially after the 5pm rush hour. Sparce traffic in the evening hours. People aren't spending.

Sorry. In SW MO area. I can understand that commuting hwys aren't seeing much of a change as these people are doing their necessary employment travel, and most are still absorbing the extra cost into their budgets. I'd venture maybe as low as 6% are actually car pooling.

In my area I'm definitely seeing less city traffic in the evenings, and I equate that to people cutting out restaurant dinners and entertainment costs.
