It isn't as if Jack is shorter than John.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 411199I think it's a tradition from his era. His dad was John, his son was John. The third or fifth or whatever. So had a nickname. My grandma was Maria, and so were like 5 of her cousins. (They weren't creative with names back then.) So they called her Mamie, and it stuck for life. His father was Joseph.
