Have you ever wondered how Jack became a nickname for John? Apart from the first letter, the two names have nothing in common. There are several names in the English language that have no apparent correlation with the standard nickname. Here are some of those names and how the nickname came about.

John-Jack

One of the most famous bearers of this name, John F. Kennedy, was known to friends and family as "Jack." But I wonder if he knew how much history that name had? John is a name with history stretching back far into Biblical times. However, during medieval times, the name John was altered slightly in the Germanic tongues to Jankin or Jackin. Out of that, we get the nickname Jack.

Me neither.

Quick, someone post a thread and raise the first BS flag on themselves for another first.

Because once as a young man he lifted a car off of an old lady's pinky toe, ever since then his buddies called him "Jack".

I think it's a tradition from his era. His dad was John, his son was John. The third or fifth or whatever. So had a nickname.

My grandma was Maria, and so were like 5 of her cousins. (They weren't creative with names back then.) So they called her Mamie, and it stuck for life.

Re: Why did people call JFK 'Jack'?
I don't know if this is why JFK was called "Jack", but Jack has always been a nickname for god.

"Jack of all trades"

If you think of movies and characters named Jack... you will see what i mean.

That is why the name Jackson can be considered to mean the son of god.

Thus another reason why michael jackson is revered.... michael meaning one of god. and jackson being the son of jack... or son of god.

How did we get "Dick" as a nickname for Richard, or "Mick" for Michael, or "Maggie" for Margaret, etc.

Mick is a short form for Michael. Jagger's full name is Michael Philip Jagger.
