Re: Recession proof GLP Things that might aid you in turbulent uncertain timesQuote

Don’t know if this has been mentioned.......don’t think so, but if you plan on building permanent structures, barns, cabins, etc. lumber is invaluable. Or, the means to make it and by hand or with hand tools is not the way to go brothers. A portable saw mill (band type) that is lite enough you can pull with ATVS, horse, tractor, or truck would be a treasure. No matter how much lumber you stock pile you will run out.....lumber is hard to transport. They’re pricey but worth it....you can find used very easily.

[link to www.southern-tool.com]

Also if you plan on building solid structures, stone fireplaces, floors, well, aqueducts, post footing, ect.....a portable mortar mixer(some are hand cranked and still beat mixing in buckets) and a FULL set of stone masons/bricking tools is a must.

Who knows you may find somewhere that suits you and want to make it permanent.

Quoted from MALU DAN LESTER and TRENCH make sure to read any and all of their

posts...Its your ass about to go into the sling! Better try to be ready.

So your on the run or hid deep off the grid. Your hungry and thirsty and yet

your stuck inside a pine forest. For miles around all you can see is white

pines and no wild life for you to gain a meal from. To make it worse, its

styarted to snow.

So, what are you going to do?

Eat, drink and be merry is the answer. Heres how.

First off, you have your survival kit yes? good. Inside it should be at least a

fire starting kit, an axe and a shelter tarp and your steel mug.

Time to get working.

First off build your fire but DO NOT LIGHT IT. A fire thats not warming you or

cooking your food is just an IR signal to those who are watching out for you.

Your under pine, your signatures minimal, so keep it that way.

Gather up some of that snow. We are going to melt it to give us some nice fresh

water for our tea. Yes, I did say tea.

Now, go to the lowest branches that have the newest needles on, and take a good

hand full from as near to the trunk as you can get. This handful of needles

holds five times the vitamin C weight for weight than two oranges or lemons. So

gather up enough for yourself and never take more than you need to feed

yourself.

Light your fire, take a good slug of that snow and melt it down, and then,

taking those needles, place them inside a spare sock or spare bit of material

to make a DIY tea bag, make it ready and then place the 'tea bag' into the

water. Bring it to a nice rolling boil for 15 minutes.

When times up, remove the 'tea bag', and sup up. Instant cure for scurvy right

there.

Trust me its really nice stuff is that tea.

Now, we are refreshed, but still hungry. Well, lets make some fries. Taking

your axe, pick a good healthy tree. Strip off a patch of bark maybe a quarter

of the diameter of the trunk and cut it away. Now, you have the wood exposed,

cut into it till you reach the 'inner' wood (very hard, very resiliant to

cutting) and peel off your strip. this is the phloem, the nutrient carrying

'outer layer' that sits under the bark. Its sappy and messy work, but guess

what? its superbly edible.

Right, you have your large strip of phloem, now cut off thin wide strips, make

them as thin as you can, and take them to your fire. Place them into the edges

of your fire until they are a nice crispy golden colour.

Take from the fire, and eat.

Very sweet tasting, very crispy and very good for you. If you don't let them

burn, thse chips will be full of sappy sugary goodness.

From one tree comes your hunger and thirst cure with a medical benefit to boot.

Nettle tea.

Every ones heard of it, but do you know how to actually make it? if not, read

on!

Early spring or late winter produces the sweetest flavour, but when ever you

find nettles growing and there are plentiful young plants about you can utilise

them.

First off, find a nettle patch that has new growth. You are looking for growth

no higher than 6 inches. Reason is that the taller they get, the more bitter

they will taste, so short is sweet wins here.

Find your plants and de-leaf them. The way i do it is to wear a glove, start at

the base and forefinger and thumb upwards taking off all of the leaves. You

want a good fist sized ball of leaves per person for your brew if your making a

large pot, so don't be stingy!

Right, then get your make shift tea bag (a sock, tight, woven mesh bag) and

place your leaves in it. Bring your water to a nice rolling boil and for 15

minutes just let the leaves roll about. The water will start to go green, and

the deeper the green, the 'fuller' the flavour will be. i like mine so green

its almost black but each to their own, and I suggest you start off with a

lighter shade.

So remove the 'tea bag' but DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY.

Now, add a slice of any available sweetener be it apple or black berry or even

a handful of rose hip skins. Enjoy your brew.

Why didn't we throw away the leaves? because when we were out walking we

collected a good sac full of lime leaves too. Its salad time.

Mix the nettle leaves in with your cool lime leaves, add a seasoning of your

choice and enjoy your salad. They actually taste rather nice in a perfect blend

of sweet lime tree leaves and slightly earthy nettle leaf, very much like a

boiled spinnach.

Edible fungi.

First off a warning: IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT AS TO WHAT YOU ARE PICKING OR

EATING, STOP RIGHT AWAY. ONLY PICK FRESH HEALTHY FUNGI WITH NO ROTTEN AREAS OR

DISCOLOURING THAT MAY LEAD TO MISTAKEN IDENTITY. PICK AND EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

So, edible fungi. I have provided links to pictures of very edible and

delicious fungi that I eat. I will not link to anything i have not eaten in

quantaties myself.

1) Chicken of the woods.
[link to www.northamptonshirewildlife.co.uk]

Beautiful taste, elegant additive to your cooking. Prepare to your liking, but

is delicious in a salad or fried in a little butter or oil.

2) Branching Oyster.
[link to www.northamptonshirewildlife.co.uk]

Has a relative,
[link to www.northamptonshirewildlife.co.uk]
That is also suitably edible. Pick only young fresh ones, any age related

yellowing will make their taste and texture a bit 'tough'. Cook in a sauce or

add to a stew.

3) Jews ear.
[link to www.northamptonshirewildlife.co.uk]

Is ideal as a filler for a salad or stir fry. Absorbs flavours from any sauces,

and thinly sliced makes a very tasty treat. Don't over use it as you will find

much of your sauce being sucked up by it!

camper trailers are great for bugging out with your stuff..know aead of time

what you want to throw into the camper and keep stuff handy to load up

fast..bikes are wise as are spare parts tires tools for each family

member..well stocked camper with plenty butane burried elsewhere will have you

surviving in comfort..camp by a water source .elec would be good also....

Nothing could be finer than to be "On Vacation" in the outback of a Natl Forest

or BLM land when the shit goes down.

Well, being on your own land with all you want there; well, security fencing,

nice house, lots of wood, organic garden site, chicken yard, barn for animals

or mechanic'in work...

But If you got a trailer and maybe your gear stashed at a storage lot near the

BLM/NF you got lots going right. Camper is a great boon to your spirits.

Nothing to setup, it works right away. If you got a few 100lb propane tanks and

maybe an external pump and filter to draw water into your holding tanks, you

are set. Dig a septic pit for your blackwater.

Yeah, bathing with a washcloth from a large mixing bowl or galvanized tub can

work.

Better than a travel trailer is a Cargo trailer that'll hold 8000 pounds of

gross weight. Pull that with your 4x4 crew cab one ton diesel and you are in

business where ever you arrive. Effectively your trailer can handle 6K and the

truck another ton. Might even do a tandem trailer. I have seen trucks pulling a

camper, pulling a boat.... Not me, but could be done...

A Yurt, Tipi, or Military tent is a great thing in the outback. Got a

barrelstove and a smoke hole for the stack you are in business. Rig a water

jacket and a griddle on the barrel and you have a real cookstove. Line the

barrel with clean sand, not saltwater sand, and the barrel will last for years.

energy bars not on my list, unless they're the XL Snickers.

What I like in the way of trail food is something hot. Soup mix, jerky or dried

bacon bits, fr dried potatoes, some green peas or beans. Inst coffee or tea

bags, Wylers or gatorade. Maybe try Kurt Saxon's cook in a thermos? Rice and

beans would be excellent. Maybe carry some very dry Salami and cheese. Pilot

bread or tortillas. Spam or Treet is damn good hotfried up in the morning.

Buy some onions and potatoes and dehydrate them. Add some bacon bits and Wow,

that is pretty good. Forget Ramen soups. they are loaded with msg and shit.

Maybe the noodles, but the McCormicks soup base is way better than bouillon

cubes and one $3 plastic jar of the chicken or beef base will make a gallon or

two of soup or gravy base. Add flour or starch for gravy.

Carry some flour and bake some bannock or flat bread.

Best yet, your bug out bag is the trunk of your car. maybe even take out the

rear seat and get a roof bag to carry all you can.

I also think people are way underestimating their need for food reserves.

You may not have time to garden. Might not be safe to be outdoors. Need to have

as much bulk and longterm storing food as you can acquire.

How you gonna cook? So you have MSR stainless cook set, and nice stainless

kitchenware; how're you fixed for cast iron and grilling? Not on that $1000

stainless behemoth on your back porch but outdoors or fireplace cooking? Maybe

you have some monster BBQ smoker on a trailer that you fire with red oak for

that tangy BBQ flavor? That'll do part of the job. Cast iron cook gear does the

rest or all of it. If you have a real hearth fireplace in your house, use it.

Where you gonna get firewood?

Live up North? Maybe you can make an ice-house to have ice box refrigeration?

Mound up your snow this year in a shaded area of your yard and cover it with

straw and tarps. Everything God puts in your way is an asset if you can see it

as such.

Wishing you weren't broke won't fix it.

But, there's always Lester's greatest resource; The Resale Shop!!! Scrounge up

all the cash you want to spare and checkout your Purple Heart, Salvation Army,

Goodwill, Amvets, Disabled Vets, and missionary outreach Resale.

Knives... I bought a Camillus Air Force survival knife and a quality diving

knife for $5 ea at Goodwill on one day. Other times I've found German chef's

knives for $3 ea, or Chicago Cutlery for $1. If you have a grinder or Dremel

Tool, you can buy good stainless kitchen knives, full tang for under $1 and

shape them as you see their best function.

Wool sox, long underwear, knit caps, gloves, gore-tex, boots, Backpacks It is

ALL there at the Resale shop.

Make a day of it. Visit them all. Get the feel for what store sells what.

Likely to be having a Thanksgiving or Black Friday sale at many stores this

week.

If you are really impoverished, (not saying, but..) there is always dumpster

diving behind the Thrifts or even asking to go through their discards. Lots of

good stuff they throw away. Salvation Army will even help you out

The Survivalist is not "a survivor".
The Survivalist is one who has moved their family out of harms way, usually

from the city or dense suburbs and to an area which he/she has identified as

safe.

In the event of societal collapse and ensuing chaos, this means "out of the

line of fire". Defending against mutant zombies is not the concern. Being

prepared and able to respond in a defensive situation is prudent, but not the

Survivalist's main concern.

FACT: If you are planning/preparing to fight your way to safety, IE see

yourself bugging out with 50lbs of ammo, rifle and flak vest; then you are

really playing at this and indulging in delusions. The guy who figures to fire

600 rds of AK ammo while bugging out is dead-meat before he begins.

A Survivalist will be expert at camouflage and hiding, so he/she doesn't have

to discharge a weapon.

Yet, weapons are a concern. The 2nd biggest mistake people acquiring new

firearms seem to make is embracing the .22lr or shotgun platform as a primary

weapon. My view is that your primary weapon must be on your person at all times

and ready to defend your life decisively. Long guns of any sort cannot do this

due to their size. They are ungainly to grab and shoot in a tight space and

heavy so likely NOT to be where you need them, IE in your hands, with you.

Personal water filtration devices are about the most critical to your survival

if you are warm and dry. You will die of hypothermia long before dehydration if

you get wet/chilled and body core temps drop even 4F. Yet, if you can stay warm

and dry, and then obtain filtered water which you store in a drinking canteen

like a Camelback or MSR Dromedary bag, you are handling the three most critical

aspects of immediate survival and self-sufficient living.

Food. If you don't have it you probably won't be able to forage for it.

Got stuff? Bought gear and supplies, but haven't even unpacked them? Figure

maybe to return or sell that stuff if all this blows over?

It's not going to just go away....
The USA has not been looted for every last dime so we can all sing Kumbaya and

get with the newest new deal...

Knowing how to USE your tools, your shortwave radio, your dehydrator, your

camping gear and handloading eqpt not to mention the skills to fix what you

have and make stuff you need; these are the skills that will save your life.

Not much going for you if you have lots of herbs and homeopathic remedies, but

never learned how to use your Kent's Repertory or Materia Medica. Herbs the

same way.

About the most useless piece of gear you will own, once you get where you are

going is your vehicle. Really think the country lanes, market roads and back

highways will be "safe"??? Where you gonna be going, anyway? Bugging out from

your BO location? Only gonna get one bite at this apple...

This is not just a SITX idea, but for all those times when times might be hard

and a few fresh fish would go down a treat as 'extras' on the table.

This idea is super cheap, effective, and so simple to make its actually real

fun. The end result is a fish trap that makes lines almost redundant if you get

one of these up and running.

(I tried and tested this out on a private river, and do not know the legality

of these in countries where you may read this, so if you use it, check first!).

So what do we need?

1 large float.
2 pieces of say 3 feet by 2 feet wooden / plastic board.
for the top and bottom.
5 pieces of 2 by 2 for the vertical supports.
A large roll of fine mesh chicken wire.
Some single strand wire.
1 old coke bottle.
A few yards of twine / rope / para cord for an anchor and retrival means.
Some cammo netting if you have it, if not, use natural available cammo i.e.

leaves and dirt / branches.

So, heres what we do.

We place one board on the floor and attach our pieces of two by two at each

corner and one in the centre like so.

[link to img116.imageshack.us]
We then mesh three side of it like so....

[link to img116.imageshack.us]

and taking our coke bottle as a guide size, we make a mesh funnel, and then

with our final side we cut out the hole and attach the funnel as so....

[link to img208.imageshack.us]

We then have a trap looking like this, which just needs baiting and a lid on

it!

[link to img116.imageshack.us]

So, for the lid, we just seal it down tight, adding a float so it doesn't sink

to the bottom (unless you want crabs or lobster / crayfish of course!) and then

throw our camouflage over it. We then secure it with our rope, and then leave

it be for a few days.

Believe me when i say you will not believe how many fish you have inside your

trap once you go back to check it.

I did this in a private river, and i kid you not I got dozens, a larder full in

one sitting. Great for leaving be at coming back at a later time for a table

full of food.

################################################## #

Possibly the easiest, quickest to build and most effective trap i have ever

come across. I have tried it, and it works so well i almost felt guilty about

it when i hauled in nearly 30lb of fish (returned almost half, ate and shared

the rest).

Enjoy. Dan

I'm guessing a tool truck...

Lately I've been looking at a Ford F350 with a large tool box and crane on the back. thinking I could put my welder, portable gennie and lots of tools.

then if we had to move we would have a fuel and tools truck to service the convoy of folks...

Big truck would also be towing a buffalo water and fuel trailer....

Re: Recession proof GLP Things that might aid you in turbulent uncertain timesQuote

From Enigma post:

Another GLP superstar of reasoned preparation

What astounds me and my brother that lives in Alaska is how many people go away from their home with no tools or survival gear.

We were on the phone last night talking, and he got a new used snow machine, and hasn't gone through it completely, and it quit on him the other day a few miles from his house. He had his survival gear and tools and it was only a fouled plug, but HE COULD NOT FIND his 13/16 plug socket... and the way the fan shroud was situated, he could not get the crescent on the plug either. He spent 3 hours taking the whol fan assembly, shroud and lots and lots of stuff off, just to get a fouled plug out, clean and then put the whole machine back together.

BUT he could have stayed the night if need be, and he never leaves home on his machines without snow shoes...

we start talking about the family rule of 1 hour in a vehicle equals 3 days walking...

and it's true, one hour of snow machine riding ALSO is 3 days walk...

ASSUME you are in a car and drive one hour, average speed of 60 mph...

that would take you 3 LONG days to get home...

same on a snow machine at 20 mph and snow shoes or skiis.

So ANYTIME we leave home we have 3 days of supplies, good shoes and some basic survival gear, rain gear, a bit of food and water as you NEVER KNOW when you are going to have to walk.

Every one of my gear bags has a water purifier in it. a couple of leatherman tools, some bailing wire, rope, cord and various other tools.

I NEVER drive more than 3 hours from home without a full took kit, extra fuel, tire patch kits, and a serious survival kit.

My biggest anxiety is when I have to fly to a strange city and not have all my stuff... but I tend to take much of it anyway, and will immediatly go and buy some gear when I get there and bring it back.

If I am going to strange city by plane, I always take some mountain house, and tools, boots and b asic camping gear. Some of my collegues laugh at me, when I show up on a business trip with a couple of large duffel bags...

but I tell them I will NOT be stranded..

If I am going to be there for any length of time, my first free moment is to go to a camping store and buy emergency food, water and what I feel I could not bring...

now this DOES cause me some redundancy at home, but remember I have a lot of kids, girlfriends, wives and sycophants that ARE NOT as prepped as I am so it goes into the give away stash at home...

My big push lately is a good pair of leather and rubber boots for each family member. Leather boots are great for hiking and hard walking, but if it's muddy wet, sloppy and nasty a good pair of ankle fit rubber boots are a godsend to keep your feet warm.

tarps, raingear, rope and rubber boots...
