Schwarzenegger Threatens State Employees As Budget Stalemate Drags On

Los Angeles, July 26, 2008 (LPAC)--California's fascist Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has threatened to sign an executive order next week, which would cut the wages for more than 200,000 state employees to $6.55/hour -- the federal minimum wage -- if a budget deal is not reached by next week. The Guvernator argues that he is being forced to take this action in order to "preserve cash," as the state has been functioning without a budget for nearly one month.

Democratic State Controller John Chiang said he would ignore Schwarzenegger's order, saying the state has sufficient cash to pay bills through September. He called this a "cynical attempt by a governor who has spent the past few weeks going up and down the state criticizing others for political posturing."

This is the latest threat from the Governor to break a deadlock which shows no sign of movement. With a $15.2 billion deficit (in the $101 billion general fund), record home foreclosures, an official 6.8% unemployment rate, and an accelerating rate of bank collapses, Schwarzenegger has already threatened Medicaid, doctors, and teachers with unacceptable cuts. He is merely doing the job for which he was selected, by Stanford-based fascist George Shultz, who saw in the one-time steroid-popping body builder a man "with the stomach" to make the "hard cuts," i.e., to implement fascist austerity.

With the Democrats refusing to submit to his chest-thumping rants, and his threats to demolish what's left of the state's social service and health care delivery system, to achieve a balanced budget, he is reduced to stunts such as his threat to illegally withhold wages from state workers. However, while Arnie's popularity rating has plummeted, again dropping below 40%, Democrats have failed to capitalize on it, as the approval rating for the two houses of the state legislature is even lower, and leading members have been intimidated, by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, from approaching Congress, to demand support of legislation such as Lyndon LaRouche's Home Owner and Bank Protection Act, which would offer a first step out of the disintegration of the U.S. -- and global - banking system.
