Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
Think of the sound a donkey makes... "hee-haw" .... now substitute the words with pure, low tones... 2 of them. Sometimes one is sustained longer than the second tone, sometimes not....

I've heard them when the power was completely out in our area, so nothing to do with appliances in the house or surroundings. We do have a cell tower about a mile away as the crow flies.

Occasionally, it will modulate wildly, rapid fire sort of effect. Other times, it is slow and steady.

Easiest to hear in the bathroom (pipes), and bedroom (inner spring mattress), but I've heard in many rooms, different times of day (if it's quiet). I've heard in my yard and in my car with windows and doors shut. I've even heard them at a friends house who lives 2 miles away.

Fortunately, my ceiling fan drowns them out, so I can ignore in the summer... otherwise, it's a real pain in the arse.

Here, it is a consistent sound.
Never heard any changes in intensity or tone.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hum is a generic name for a series of phenomena involving a persistent and invasive low-frequency humming noise not audible to all people. Hums have been reported in various geographical locations. In some cases a source has been located. A well-known case was reported in Taos, New Mexico, and thus the Hum is sometimes called the Taos Hum. Hums have been reported all over the world, especially in Europe. A Hum on the Big Island of Hawaii, typically related to volcanic action, is heard in locations dozens of miles apart. The local Hawaiians also say the Hum is most often heard by men. The Hum is most often described as sounding somewhat like a distant idling diesel engine. Typically the Hum is difficult to detect with microphones, and its source and nature are hard to localize.

The Hum is sometimes prefixed with the name of a locality where the problem has been particularly publicized: e.g., the "Bristol Hum" or the "Taos Hum".

Mine is more than just a hum: It's more like a giant giro machine coming on line.....starts low, and increases volume exponentially for awhile.

You're hearing the Taos Hum.
Someone out there has simulated it with a mp3 file if you want to compare.

For the past month or so I have been hearing a very low level humming sound. No one else hears it and I'm starting to wonder WTF is going on. I hear it mostly at night and early morning, because I'm guessing it's the quiet time of the day (night).

This humming is not constant, it sounds like an electric motor trying to cycle. I've turned off all the curcuits in the house so I know it's not from within the house. I can even hear it when I'm out in the woods or at the neighbors house.
It's really starting to bug me out!

And no it's not tinnitus.

IT MIGHT BE THE NAVY’S PROJECT “ELF.”
Google … does ELF transmit a low hum? There is an abundance of information on ELF at the google information page and at the following link:

I hear this sound before quakes comes. The louder it is or the closer I am to the epicenter the more severe it is.

Try to pressure-compensate like you do when diving or flying. For me, the hum disappears immediately when doing that.

Good luck!

I hear it too.. Ive started sleeping with something on to drown out the noise.. This weekend, camped two nights well away from town.. Slept alone in my tent.. The humming was almost unbearable, no painful just severely annoying, until I finally was able to drown it out with thoughts..

It's not in the ears, and there is no pressure in the ears/sinuses. It's an internal sound in the head, like you "feel" what you hear.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
i've heard that for the past 7 yrs. not tinnitus or intracranial hypertension. inside my head. it's changed over the years, become smoother and quieter. it has an ohm like sound, and it did sound like a turbine generator or something, continual but it would like turn off for a few seconds. weird isnt it? it's only been absent for 10 days back in dec 01. i'm glad it's not as loud now, in the very beginning it sounded like water rushing very forcefully but it wasnt arterial blood, it was too unrhythmic.

As far as I know there never was concrete answer provided to answer peoples questions as to what is makeing this noise.

Mysterious humming driving Aucklanders 'bonkers'
12:00AM Friday October 27, 2006
By Kate Chapman

A mysterious humming driving people to despair across Auckland has pricked the ears, and curiosity, of scientists trying to find the source.

Massey University computer engineering scientists Tom Moir and Fakhrul Alam have been contacted by more than 30 people, most in Auckland and the North Shore, who claim to have heard a humming noise.

The symptoms are similar to those suffered by people with tinnitus, commonly associated with a prolonged high-frequency ringing in the ear.

The scientists are visiting people who can hear the humming, and trying to measure the noise in the hope they will be able to identify its source.

People from central Auckland to Kaiwaka in Northland have reported the sound, as have residents from the North Shore suburbs of Torbay, Browns Bay, Murrays Bay, Birkenhead and Beach Haven, and Stanmore Bay on Whangaparaoa.

The scientists are measuring the frequency by playing a second low frequency to someone who can hear the humming. When the person can no longer hear the hum, the frequency they are playing is the same as the humming noise.

Dr Moir said people could definitely hear a sound. "It's quite serious to them, it's driving them bonkers. I was there at the same time and I couldn't hear anything."

He said the sound was well within the average hearing range for people.

Most people can hear between 20 hertz and 20 kilohertz and the humming is around 56 hertz, according to Dr Moir's research.

Not everyone could hear the sound, because of its low volume, he said.

"We're all born differently - some people are better runners, some people are better hearers."

I read this article along with many others about humming sounds around the world. I searched the internet and gleened lots of info for days before I posted here.

What seems different with my humming is that it isn not a constant hum. I starts and stops..lasting up to about 4 seconds.

I hear on frequent occasion a hum or low ringing at night

Very quiet here so much so you can hear a frog hop

So to find out if it's an internal source or external source I plug my ear canals with two fingers to find out

hope that helps
