There is a group of friends using the same User Name when posting info. They are a group of idiots using this forum to spread chaos and having fun making up lies just for fun.

i 'hate' to be the grammar patrol... but the OP's use of words was correct, even though it was used for a mislead post.
"There is a group of friends"
"there" being identifier, "is" concerning the "group", which is a singularity cumulated of the multiple individual "friends"
"They are a group of idiots"
"they" denoting (in this case) multiple people (though the word is normally a singular figure, in this case there are many of them, and so is a plurality), "are" again acknowledging that there is more than one of them
had they said "there are a group of friends", or "they is a group of idiots", then the wording would have been incorrect and laughable... but the case is not such
retake your English classes before you attempt your next "grammar lesson".
