Sounds like you have a good grasp of the situation. People used to channel angels and then aliens became much more popular.
Crowley was an interesting man. He liked to push peoples buttons to help them move along. I would however caution that he got plugged into some rather strange things and unless one has the ability of sight (clairvoyant, or in old terms discernment of spirits) I would not advise pursuing his out of body friends.
