I think that the issue with most Americans is not so much what he did but that he lied about it. We like our politicians to be honest. We were raised on stories about Honest Abe and little George Washington who could not lie to his father about cutting down a cherry tree.
When Gary Hart was running for president and he vehemently denied having an affair and then challenged the reporters to catch him and they did, it wasn't so much that anyone cared he was having affair as much as it show HOW STUPID Gary was. We don't like STUPID for president. (current prez exempted of course)
So I think it isn't so much that John Edwards was sleeping around when his wife had cancer but that he would let her get up there publicly on stage with him and campaign for him (while shes dying of cancer) and when he was lying daily to the American public. His wife and family knew but I know I couldn't stand to see a spouse or parent publicly lying to cover their own asses. It is cowardice. And they usually have to fess up like ole lying finger wagging Bill Clinton and when they do it is more painful then if they had never lied to begin with.
