A little background: In Missouri, Deviate sexual assault is "deviate sexual intercourse" (anal or oral sex or fondling) without the consent of another person. Statutory sodomy is "deviate sexual intercourse" with a person under 17. They are punished exactly the same: class C felony and up to 7 years.

Noteworthy is that he wasn't charged with forcible sodomy which carries a potential life sentence for "deviate sexual intercourse"

Because the girl was 14, the punishment is the same. If she were 13, the charge probably would have been 1st degree statutory sodomy (deviate sexual intercourse with a person under 14) which carries a potential life sentence. In other words, had she been 13 instead of 14, he would face a much harsher sentence.

On another note, I find it very amusing that he represents Frontenac, which is probably the most affluent area in the state. It's rare to see rich people getting caught.
