Georgia 'overrun' by Russian troops as full-scale ground invasion begins
Georgian officials tonight claimed the country had been 'overrun' by Russian troops after a full-scale ground invasion.

Amid reports that Moscow forces had taken the town of Gori - and were marching on the capital Tsblisi - Georgian soldiers appeared to be in full retreat.

Troops were apparently in complete chaos as a full-scale rout pushed them back through the countryside.

Meanwhile, the civilian crisis intensified with thousands of refugees fleeing the seemingly unstoppable advance of the Russian army.

An unidentified Georgian woman cries after finding out that her child was killed in a neighbouring village, in the town of Gori

Around 9,000 soldiers and 350 tanks had been massing at a base in the border region of Abkhazia throughout the day.

But the huge force has now moved into Georgia proper, demolishing hopes of a rapid solution to an increasingly bitter conflict.

The invasion comes as Gordon Brown urges Russia to call a ceasefire.

The Prime Minister warned Russia there was 'no justification' for its military action in Georgia.

Residents of Gori wait to receive humanitarian aid from local authorities as Russia called today for Georgian forces to surrender in the separatist enclave of Abkhazia

Mr Brown issued a strongly-worded statement after Georgia backed an EU peace plan for the breakaway province of South Ossetia amid continued fighting.

'There is no justification for continued Russian military action in Georgia, which threatens the stability of the entire region and risks a humanitarian catastrophe,' he said.

'There is an immediate and pressing need to end the fighting and disengage all military forces in South Ossetia.

'The Georgian government has offered a ceasefire, which I urge the Russians to reciprocate without delay.'

Meanwhile, intense shelling continued in the breakaway region of South Ossetia where hostilities broke out last Friday.

There were also conflicting reports that Russian troops had overrun the city of Gori while Georgian forces were concentrating on holding Mtskheta, 15 miles from the capital.

Retaliation: Russian forces secure the area in the Khurcha settlement in breakaway region of Abkhazia

Earlier in the day, Russian premier Vladimir Putin raised the stakes over the conflict by lashing out at the U.S. as the fighting continued to escalate in the region.

The Russian prime minister rejected calls from Georgia for a ceasefire and declared that his country would pursue its mission to its 'logical conclusion'.

A day after a face-to-face meeting with President George W. Bush in Beijing who expressed 'grave concern', Mr Putin accused the U.S. of siding with Georgia by ferrying Georgian troops from Iraq to the battle zone.

'It is a shame that some of our partners are not helping us but, essentially, are hindering us,' said Mr Putin. 'The very scale of this cynicism is astonishing.'

Russian Defence ministry spokeswoman Nana Intskerveli confirmed tanks had seized a Georgian military base in the western town of Senaki.

The statement indicated Russian troops had entered the region from a second rebel province of Abkhazia, where troops have been massing since the weekend.

Did you know that the Georgian troops in Iraq were stationed by the border of Iran in the north?
Did you know after USA/UK they are the largest force stationed there?
Now that they are gone, there is a significant gap that can not be filled. There is no one to do it. That border would have been the most usfull area had USA attacked Iran. THe more you look in to it, the more amazing this chess game becomes, but mainly on the part of Russians. Its just like their warheads. It takes off but then splits in to several other warheads all going in different direction with percise accuracy. WOW
USA has lost an important part of the operation and it is not likely that Georgian troops be back now.
I would not be surprised if something else happens now in Gulf countries/pakistan/Afganistan and USA loses the use of some of the bases there.

Are you begining to get this picture?
Some one somewhere does not want USA to attack Iran and they are doing anything to stop this. THere is a good chance that certain factions in USA (who are against NeoCons) are working with the Russians to stop this thing.
10 days ago a top general warned Israel not to pull another USS liberty. Anyone Remember? We know that Israel had a hand in this provication since they were there all along. Perhaps the general knew what was going to happen and warned Israel in advance but they didn't listen and went ahead. If this is the case then it means that they had warned Russia and Russia was ready for it.
It might turn out that the Russians and certain forces in USA are the good guys after all.

Coming on the heels of Operation Brimstone just a week ago that saw U.S., British and French naval forces participate in war games in the Atlantic Ocean, the object of which was to practice enforcing an eventual blockade on Iran, the joint task force is now headed for the Gulf and what could easily turn into a major confrontation with Iran.

The naval force comprises a U.S. Navy super carrier battle group and is accompanied by an expeditionary carrier battle group, a British Royal Navy carrier battle group and a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine.

Leading the pack is the nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its Carrier Strike Group Two; besides its 80-plus combat planes the Roosevelt normally transports, it is carrying an additional load of French Naval Rafale fighter jets from the French carrier Charles de Gaulle, currently in dry dock.

Also reported heading toward Iran is another nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan and its Carrier Strike Group Seven; the USS Iwo Jima, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and a number of French warships, including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste.

Once the naval force arrives in the Gulf region it will be joining two other U.S. naval battle groups already on site: the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Peleliu; the Lincoln with its carrier strike group and the latter with an expeditionary strike group.

Russia is unlikely to get involved in a military showdown in the Persian Gulf, particularly at this time when it is engaged in a major confrontation with the Republic of Georgia in South Ossetia.

Because the pieces are falling into place for it. Russia is distracted right now, so is everyone else with the Olympics going on. Once Georgia is taken back, it will complicate the Iran situation. Cheney and the rest of the neocons are probably thinking it's now or never. They want to pull this off before the election and they're pulling the strings in Georgia to get it done. I'd place my bets on a false flag event in the next 3-4 weeks.

because their is a freaking HUGE naval armada heading towards the Gulf. There will be 5 carriers + 2 assault carriers. They just finished practising a naval blockade (Operation Brimstone) and then started steming toward the Gulf. ETA six days.

Re: Georgia 'overrun' by Russian troops as full-scale ground invasion begins
Georgia - Oil Politics

Development of Caspian oil and gas resources and export routes has been slowed by regional conflict, political instability, and lack of regional cooperation. Many of the proposed export routes pass through areas where conflicts remain unresolved. Most of these are in the Transcaucasus part of the Caspian region, where conflicts in Georgia, the Chechnya portion of Russia, and between Armenia and Azerbaijan, hinder the development of export routes westward from the Caspian.

The future of the Caucasus region could be determined by the pipelines running through it. Each country in the region and several outside it have their own views on how oil and gas should reach the rest of the world. The western route for early oil from Azerbaijan goes from Baku to the Georgian port of Supsa on the Black Sea, and several other proposed pipeline routes also pass through Georgia. Pipeline construction on the western route was suspended briefly in October 1998 because of the fighting between government forces and those led by Akaki Eliava.

The proposed pipeline routes pass near several regions of Georgia that have been the site of separatist struggles, such as Abkhazia and Ossetia. Georgia has expressed a willingness to grant Abkhazia some autonomy, and talks to resolve the standoff have included proposals to route future oil pipelines across the rebel region, on the premise that economic cooperation could help bring peace to the region. The port of Supsa, the terminus of the western route for "early oil" from the AIOC, is 12 miles from a buffer zone between Abkhazia and Georgia.

The long controversial Baku-Ceyhan ("Main Export Pipeline") from the Caspian through Turkey to the Mediterranean should be completed by 2004, along with a parallel gas pipeline from Turkmenistan. Where these pipelines are built will create winners and losers in this multinational competition. The success of these projects would end an almost century-old Russian stranglehold on the oil and gas resources of the Caspian. The new pipelines are clearly is meant to weaken the influence of Russia in the region and therefore are regarded as hostile by the Russian Government. Moscow might choose to cause more trouble in the Caucasus. It has fomented rebellions in the past and can do so again. Georgia, through which the new pipeline would pass, is particularly vulnerable. It blamed Moscow for backing the secession of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The American military in comparison to the Russians isn't a very valid basis of comparison numerically nor technologically because of geography #1. The American military is spred all over the globe, and has supply lines that are 10 times more distant and difficult than Russias'. Russia has an enormous advantage over us in any extended conflict as they are in their own back yard/Georgia. Georgia isn't another Afghanistan where Russia will get bogged down by Mujahadeen style guerilla warfare fighting, only to leave years later with their economy is tatters and their tail between their legs. I hope this isn't what the Neo's are planning on as their strategy.

We, people of Russia, want to address to you, people of the world. Do not be fooled by the world mass media outlets, such as CNN, Reuters, BBC, Sky TV, and by many newspapers which conduct propaganda of false information inspired by the Government of Georgia, its President and their allies, the USA in particular. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! On 7th August 2008 at 22:00 Georgian troops led by the USA military instructors attacked the breakaway region of South Ossetia. At 3:30 a.m. on 8th August 2008 Georgian tanks entered the city of Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. As a result of the heavy artillery bombardment, the use of tanks and heavy combat materials undertaken by the Georgian troops against Southern Ossetia about 2,000 innocent civilians, mainly children, women and elderly were killed. About 40,000 of our people fled to Russia in order to find a refuge and shelter, and to escape the ethnic cleansing conducted by the Georgians.

The city of Tskhinvali was fully destroyed during the day of 8th August 2008 by the Georgian troops. It is genocide against our people conducted by the Georgians. As a result of the Georgian invasion, 15 Russian military peacekeepers, who have been serving in the region, were killed, 150 Russian peacekeepers were wounded. The Russian additional military units arrived to South Ossetia in the evening of 8th August 2008 in order to settle the conflict, to rescue our people, the Russian peacekeepers and to kick the Georgian invaders out of South Ossetia forever, out of our land!
We advise you that the most reliable information about the events on our land, in South Ossetia, can be found here:
