TRENTON, N.J. - Flu vaccine makers have begun shipping their products already, earlier than usual, and for the first time every strain included in the vaccine is new.
The changes are due to a push to vaccinate an extra 30 million Americans — children ages 5 to 18 — and to a significant shift in the influenza strains expected to circulate in the northern hemisphere this year. One is a new Australian strain that sickened many last winter, when the vaccine didn't match the prevalent flu strains well.
All but one of the five manufacturers expected to supply a record 143 million doses to the U.S. began shipping the vaccine in the past two weeks. Most say they hope to have all or at least the bulk of their supply in the hands of doctors, clinics and other providers by the end of October.
"We're responding to the desires of health care providers to set up their immunization clinics early," said Donna Cary, spokeswoman for one of the biggest flu vaccine makers, Sanofi Pasteur of Swiftwater, Pa.
In prior years, some manufacturers didn't start shipping until late August or September, and a couple of years ago, problems delayed some shipments until late fall, so many doses were wasted.
Normally, one or two of the three flu strains targeted by annual vaccines stays in the vaccine for several years. Public-health officials make educated guesses on what strains to include, taking into account the strains then circulating in the southern hemisphere. This is the first year all three are new to vaccines for the northern hemisphere.
Two strains, type A viruses called Brisbane 10 and Brisbane 59, were first isolated in Australia last year. The third is a type B virus first seen in Florida in 2006.
One of the Brisbane strains showed up in this country after the 2007-08 flu season began, far too late to be included in vaccines, according to Michael Shaw of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's influenza division.
"That was the one that caused all the problems," Shaw said.
Public-health officials took a black eye over the mismatch, and officials later calculated the vaccine was only about 44 percent effective. Over the last flu season, 83 deaths among children were reported; figures for adults are not yet available. While many consider the flu benign, it typically kills about 36,000 Americans, mostly the elderly, and hospitalizes more than 200,000 people every flu season.
This year, the CDC is recommending all children over 6 months get flu vaccines. |

You can get in "pre-filled syringes" without the mercury.
You have to look around.
I got the Flu BAD in 2001. 7 days on my ass. 105 Fever. Ever since then- I get the shot.
Last year was really bad for the Flu.
I got the Vaccine as did my whole family.
None of my family got the Flu last year...
I am nervous about rumors of binary weapons (think 1918) in the vaccine as have been rumored for years on the internet... |

Wraithwynd User ID: 449681 8/15/2008 5:26 PM | | Re: Uh Oh- New 2008 Flu Vaccine Being Shipped Early | Quote | The past two years we 'ran out' around here. This year the pharmacy and the doctor's office 'assures' us that we will have all of the vaccines we need.
That is a 'nice change' compared to the number of high risks people who did not receive the vaccinations and who did develop the flu and suffer.
We here have been in a 'state of crises' when it comes to flu, I suspect being a small backwater has more to do with our always being at the bottom of the list. However maybe this year there will really be enough to go around.
Of course folk in big cities got theirs, so now when its early they see foul play. |

Meh.
F**ck 'em. Fear-mongering at its worst (best?)
No way will I take any vaccines anymore nor will I give any to my pets.
Oh, and now this vaccine is supposed to cover all flues?
Yah, right.

Could be shot literally (Like the gun shot...I`ve always wondered how can this word be used for vaccine treatment aswell. Not sure it`s just a coincidence). |

Never had the flu.
Take care of yourselves. Lots of sleep, plenty of water, eat well, and reduce the stress.
I spoke with a young father (age 30 or so). He has two little girls and he doesn't see any problem with getting all the required vaccinations.
I'm really not sure about all of those shots. Especially for things that are not deadly like chicken pox. Now that little ones are getting this vaccine, will there be problems when they are adults getting shingles?? (not sure if this is correct spelling or name of the adult version). |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 283256 8/16/2008 4:23 PM | | Re: Uh Oh- New 2008 Flu Vaccine Being Shipped Early | Quote | In other words the virus is mutating so fast they cannot keep up and need the cashflow for the worthless stock they already have on hand. Alternatively they will ship it to third world countries at a 'discount' and get full tax writeoff as providing 'aid'. Also note how many 'celebrities' are dying of or contracting 'pneumonia'-Bernie Mac, Chris Mathews, etc. The numbers will only rise as we head into winter. |
