Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
I have owned 7 or 8 pit bulls, and only two chows, and allow me to give you a few facts. I have 3 boys, none of whom were ever bitten by a pit bull, but the chows both bit one or more of the kids more than once and I had to get rid of them because of the biting problems. It really all has to do with how you treat them, but around kids, I say no to the chow.

Even if you get a dog like that as a puppy, and raise them with love, there's some risk. Chows are unpredictable biters. Pit bulls are, well, pit bulls. Some are lovers but they have a higher rate of nastiness and they are built to bite hard. I'd be careful. A german shepherd or rottie might give you a more predictable and level-headed dog that will guard your family loyally.

German shepards and rotties actually have higher bite pressures than pitbulls. pitts are awesome dogs that are really misunderstood and misrepresented.

I own a pitbull and a pitbull mix. Both are highly kid friendly, animal non-aggressive and just in generall happy go lucky, I have never seen aggreesion outside of play ever. As a matter of fact, we take in rescues and Indi (my piggie pit...seriously, she resembles me kind of big for her size and LAZY) is kind of our indicator on how the other dog reacts to dogs. I fully trust my pit over every dog I've had thus far. The only thing she is a danger to is treats, chicken feed and blowing ass.

My friend has a chow chow and that dog I am scared to be around. It's like being around a shark... lifeless eyes, you never know what the thing is thinking... body language is zero.

Chows are man biters. Not social or reliable. Pits are generally good unless you want them to be otherwise.

We just buried our Chow/Pit bull Mix. In nearly ten years, she never bit anyone. She was smart, beautiful, and had a very docile and gentle demeanor. It's not the breed, it's the people that own them. Dogs that are neglected, ignored, or mis-matched with their owners can become problematic, but to just write any particular breed off for no other reason than being that breed? Unbelievable.
Comments like the negative ones here show ignorance and bigotry on a level I had never considered.

Just get one of those big doofy dogs, like a lab mix, or great dane mix. They're gentle and funny and won't get you sued.

Considering that Chows have the lowest intelligence rating of the top 100 breeds...that particular mix would just be a stunned meat-grinder.

i read that Pitbulls is a very instictive breed, and Chow Chow is pretty tough too. What kind of temperament would the mix of those breeds make, what do you think?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 466162

My husband and I just loss a dog do to cancer and she was half chow, quarter pit and a quarter bull mass. Most loving dog I ever had. Of course we had her from a pup and in my eyes it's not the dog that dangerous it's how the are treated that makes them that way. I hope I help in answering your question.

A Chow is a Chinese brand. A pit bull is the equivalent of an African brand. Figure it out whether it be dangerous fo' yo' ass. Take your dipshit time.

I have a pitt chow mix and he is the best dog I have ever had. he has the protective instinct of a chow, very loyal and loving, but will definitely protect his family. I have 3 young children that have been with him for over a year. Never ever had a problem, besides the normal pitt bull licking! lol

Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
Mt neighbor has two pits & I have been reading on the breed & honestly you can find the positives & negatives to both sides. Our neighborhood has decreased in value & I now need something to feel more protected in my home! I have allergies & a long haired dog wont do. So with my new found love for pits I have been browsing rescues for several months now. I recently came across a chow/pit mix about 4mnths & am interested in adopting it (how I came across this thread). I have read much of it & cannot say it to be completely helpful. There are the horror stories & just the same for the opposite.

I have a a chihuahua/poodle mix & have known both breeds to be highly irritable ankle biters. My girl is your perfect lap dog & loves everyone & everything! She plays with the pits next door & if they get too rough she rolls on her back & asks for love! They either love her or get bored & run around with each other.

My other concern was for my 8yr old son. As from what I can tell, it will depend on the dog & training. I plan to socialize it, & take any precautions to make sure whatever pit/mix I get I have done my part & hope the breeding has as well even if it is a mutt! I have known all kinds of mutts & they can be exceptional dogs just the same! So fingers crossed whether I get this chow/pit or any other dog, I hope it fits in & becomes a loyal family member!

Both of these breeds are dominant by nature.
Not aggressive, but dominant.
Which means, if they are disciplined wrong, or allowed to to become the alpha animal can very easily become aggressive.
Unless I was totally sure about the handling of this mixed breed, I would not have it around children or other animals.
For someone who was familiar with handling these breeds, this dog could make a great family pet.

Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
I have a pit bull female now, the tiger striped variety.

She is rambunctious, cautious but very gentle with children and smaller dogs. Her problem is large dogs her own size or bigger, and she will put them down on their backs until they submit, but never draw blood.

She knows I don't want her to hurt anyone and I am the alpha of the pack. Most people who have problems with aggressive dogs have let the dog establish itself as an alpha by not punishing it correctly. To punish a dog that has done wrong, the alpha is firm and usually nips the offending dog, and since you can't do that you have to put your hands on the dog, which some might view as abuse.

But the thing is, you don't have to do it but once for each offense, because this is how dogs are wired to react to training from the alpha. One of Ceaser Milon's 'secrets' is that when he takes the dog for a 'private' walk , he establishes his dominance over it.

Then he can train it. I am sure he kicks and slaps the dog if it does something that the alpha male would have done the same in a pack by biting.

This is not abuse, and if you don't do it and you have an digressive breed of dog, you're going to end up having a hard time getting homeowners insurance after it bites someone, or maybe even get sued into bankruptcy. Some dogs like pits who are trained improperly are dangerous to anyone or anything they can overpower.

Listening to kids is a Pit bull trait. They really do like kids once they get used to the particular child.

If they think the kid is part of their pack, they will defend him and serve him. Usually when a pit bull bites a child, the child provoked the dog in some manner, and the bites are more intended to be punitive than the jaws of death clamp they put on other dogs when they are fighting.

I have a 1 year old pit chow mix, and she is a bouncing bundle of fur! She is very protective of her family, but gets along great with my boston terrior and 2 cats. I truely believe it is all in how they are raised. If someone is gonna be dumb enough to walk your home unannounced, aren't you gonna take action? Alright then, whats the difference? They protect their family just like you do. I have learned that Rowdie does not tolerate stupid people. Soooooooo......... theres your answer.peace

Dangerous, aggressive, protective, vicious, one person dog, and it also depends on how you raise and treat them.

Well i think you are wrong! I have a chow/pit/boxer mix and a chow/rottweiler mix. Both the best dogs I've ever seen. Every dog depends on the OWNER. Yes, they are one person dogs but the ONE person makes the dogs personality! Just remember people... not all black people steal and love chicken!s226

Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
My 3-year-old pit chow Ike ( Named after the hurricane, because he was born a week after and we had NO IDEA that his mom was even pregnant) is sitting right next to me right now. He was VERY territorial as a puppy, which included sitting in my lap and glaring at his runt of a sister if she ever came close to me, and he and his mom would often fight, leaving her with scars.
But he's mostly too playful. He needs to tone down his excitement alittle.
Sometimes he climbs the fence while we're away and lays in the front yard, and while our neighbors are fearful of him because he just looks intimidating, he doesn't even act like he cares when the neighbors are out. But when I get home, he seems to mind others alot more.
His sister Fema was scared of everything. We took her to the dog park and every time another dog approached her, she would yelp loudly and repeatedly, especially the smaller dogs ( I remember the teacup chihuahua that made her nearly jump out of hr skin. XD ). Even though she was always afraid, she was kind to anyone who treated her nice.
So after e raised around fullbred pitbulls, chow chows, and pitchows in general, I have to say; Pitchows are great guard dogs, and they can still be trained to be nice to others at the same time. They ARE spoiled and require alot of attention, but for such big dogs, they're lovable. It's more about how you raise the dog to be and what you intend for it's purpose to be than it is breed.

It seems I've just wrote a biography on a dog. Oh joy.
