Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
I have a chow/ridgeback rescue cross. Best dog ever but so much a one man dog. He is very well liked in the community and extremely intelligent. He is completely attached to me and very gentle, playing with dogs, cats, and other people.

If, however, someone else walks him on a leash, he becomes the alpha dog and is very very aggressive and protective. In fact, dangerous.

I would want nothing to do with a pit/chow cross. Combines the aggressiveness of the chow with the determination of a pit. Sure, all dogs can be moulded, but IMO this would be a poor starting point.

Pit bulls are dangerous and can attack without notice.

The bulldog that Jim Stewart had adopted from a foster home had shown no signs of aggression, a roommate said.

i read that Pitbulls is a very instictive breed, and Chow Chow is pretty tough too. What kind of temperament would the mix of those breeds make, what do you think?

That is a very dangerous mix. Neither dog is trustworthy, both are agressive. You are asking for big trouble like that. Personally, I would think to not let the two breed, and if they do anyway all you can do is hope they come out ok and not attack any kids...

I currently own a pitbull/chow mix. My husband rescued her 3 years ago from a guy that used to beat her, and used her as a fighting dog. She has only ever been aggressive toward other dogs a few times, it was always over territory, but we were always able to control her. She is the sweetest, most loving, and at times timid, dog I have ever met. It just goes to show that not only are the owners part of the problem with dogs like these, but it varies between indiviual dogs. Don't just assume that because both breeds have bad reputations, a mix would immediatly be bad as well.

Dangerous, aggressive, protective, vicious, one person dog, and it also depends on how you raise and treat them.

I own rental properties, and you couldn't live in any of my places with those dogs.

I wouldn't let you, and I also wouldn't be able to get insurance.

I'm sure you'll look really tough with your big bad dog though..... and hopefully it doesn't eat your kids or anyone else' for that matter.

we have a bull mastiff in the family, so i am partial.
gentle and trustworthy for 7 years now. however his master did an excellent job of raising and training.
the chow is another story.
lived next to a family with a toddler.
one day for no reason their chow (they are biters), took a bite out of the child's face. it was horiffic.

Dogs are not dangerous, people are. Treat your Dog properly and train it well you'll have no problems. It will love you and protect you.

Treat your dog badly or exploit certain traits in it, any dog will defend it self and become un hinged.

Never leave a dog unattended with a child. Ever.
Doesnt what matter what breed it is, all dogs need to be supervised by there owner or pack leader around small children.

No disrespect but people really need to educate themselves about dogs. It's not the breed it is the owner and that is the truth. I have 2 daughters both were raised around nothing but pitbulls and they have never caused harm to them in anyway. Pitbulls really get a bad wrap, but in reality they are very loving and gentle dogs. Any dog has the potential to hurt people. It is up to the owner to control their dog. The only dogs I ever was bitten by were little lap dogs.

I agree although all dogs have certain traits, its a lot to do with the owners. I have met the sweetest pitbulls, I have also had one try to attack me in the streets. One thing a lot of people fail to see are that dogs are pack animals. Your dog desires your love and wants to be with its pack all the time. I think the saddest day of my dogs life is when he figured out that he wasn't human. Oh had a homeless frind with a chow/pit mix was a god dog a little grumpy but he was from the streets.

Ugh... pit bulls, like all dogs, are exactly as good as the owners are.

Pit bulls actually have had human aggressive behavior bred out of the breed because they had to be handled for fighting. For this reason they are the most stolen breed... they aren't even recommended as guard dogs because of how friendly they are to strangers.

All the sensationalist media stories you hear about pit bull attacks are usually about other dogs (sources have admitted to just throwing around the term pit bull because it makes more money) but is labeled as pit bull anyway.

Pit bulls get a better temperement rating than golden retrievers.

Back before this pit bull scare bullshit pit bulls were the 2nd most popular dog breed in the country and everybody had one.

I have had pit bulls for 30 years and none of then have even growled at me...

Ignorance like this really pisses me off.

A pit bull mix, you are freakin' nutso!!!

I am surrounded by people who own dogs, leave them outside and don't take proper care of them.

All of the dogs are nuts, but so are their OWNERS! The dogs bark 24/7 at nothing. I go to get my mail, dogs go nuts. I can't go in my front or back yard, dogs go nuts.

It is also aggravating to all of my neigbhors whom do not allow their animals to traumatize people.

I own cats, but am allowing the cottonmouth snakes to live in my yard, because of all of the crazy people who own wild dogs.

Come in my yard, and step on a poisonous snake.

If you own any dog, I don't care what breed, I hope you take care of it, and don't leave it outside day and night to traumatize your neighbors. I figure anyone trying to buy a pit bull, is an idiot, and should purchase a home burglary system, instead.

Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
We have a 7 year old pit/shar pei mix. My husband has owned him since he was 8 weeks old. He is neutered. Crate trained. His ex wife babied him but when they got divorce she left. Now our pit mix has issues. He's great around the family. Very sweet and loving with us. But when another dog gets near our house he goes nuts! He has broken out of our back yard soo many times the neighbors are afraid of him. He's attacked several dogs in the neighborhood.(no blood but bad enough) He even busted through our front window at 3am because of a neighbors dog that got loose and in our yard. He's very bull headed. He listens when he wants to. Sometimes he will come other times not. He's growled at my husband when he didn't want to come inside the house or if it's too early in the morning to go outside. (guess he's not a morning dog) He's never been treated poorly. We can't walk him all the time because of his aggression. We have two other dogs (boxer and weimaraner) that are wonderful, trained and well behaved. We treat our pix/shar pei mix the exact same as the other two dogs. He's just sooo much more difficult to handle. He's unpredictable. Right now we are at a loss with him and are trying to find a pit rescue that could take him and reabilitate him. We have no idea what else we can do?? My husband and I will never get another pit/shar pei mix.

As I point out to all of my fellow dog lovers, Dogs, like humans, can be mentally ill. Because of inbreeding, the rate of mental illness increases in some breeds, just like mental illness in humans can be accelerated by inbreeding.

APBT are great when you raise them right animals are very in-tune with you spirit or heart for those who don't believe so if you have a good dog an you ain't living right they wont respect you and if you don't train them right then you're in for trouble
remember they go from babies to adults so you have to prepare them not baby them give them responsibilities so they gain an awareness

chows are the same but they require much more attention during the rearing because of they are much slower learners and are easy to fall into that pack mentality Ive seen the APBT and Chow mix and it will be what you train it to be

and for those breed bashers raise one first before you open your mouth and dont bash the breed bash the breeder

Mixing two breeds with tendency toward aggression is asking for trouble.

If you have children please consider safer breeds.

Re: Is mix of PIT BULL and CHOW CHOW a dangerous mix or not?
I've known a pitbull/chow mix at a local animal shelter, took him for very long walks once a week for like a year. He's one of the greatest dogs I've ever known, he's wonderful with people (sporadically violent with dogs, no more so than your average dog). He has bitten, only after being at the shelter for months and months, and only when people have taken him for a short walk (he's not that high energy, but he really likes to spend time with people) and try to put him back in his cage. In that case, he's biting to pull the person back as they turn around (he does the same to the mesh door) and not simply being aggressive.

I can go on and on about how great this dog is, he's wonderfully behaved, house-trained, intelligent, amazing with people, can run with an owner or walk with an owner (depending on what the owner wants), he's never aggressive (unless being put back into his cage), and would be wonderful with children. He's also the prettiest dog I've ever seen. Fur and built like a pitbull, but with subtle chow chow hints (like the tongue).

I can't say that all pitbull/chowchow mixes are this way, but Bruno is, and I've talked to other pitbull/chowchow owners (well one other) and they said the same.
