Fulghum WWW.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_ge neric.jsp?channel=awst&id=news/12195p3.x ml Israel's long-range, Green Pine radar- used to find targets for the Arrow 2 air defense missile is being upgraded and doubled in power, possibly making it a candidate for conversion into a directed-energy weapon for use against Iranian and Syrian threats. Changes needed to focus the Green Pine radar's transmitter/receiver elements into a single beam so that it could function as a weapon. It's very interesting-we do have activity regarding higher power for the radar, but mainly to achieve longer range says a senior Israeli official. We are going to double the power. In Israel, people are looking seriously at directed energy A Pentagon radar specialist says the potential for the array would probably not be in ballistic missile defense, because warheads are so well shielded. But it could be an excellent weapon to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles, Amraam-type air-to-air missiles or surface-to-air homing missiles, he notes, because they are vulnerable to jamming of their guidance systems and other electronics. Meanwhile, Israelis acknowledge they are tracking U.S. efforts to demonstrate anti-missile weapons using high-power microwave (HPM) arrays and focused radar beams. A Vigilant Eagle HPM prototype has disabled shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missiles; and MP-RTIP, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, is being eyed as an anti-cruise missile weapon. With the right software modifications, virtually any AESA radar--particularly large, long-range, anti-missile arrays--could be used as a directed-energy weapon by focusing pulses of radar energy on target missiles. The energy spikes are tailored to enter missiles through antennas or sensor apertures where they can fool guidance systems, scramble computer memories or even burn out sensitive electronic components. HPM does virtually the same thing using different frequencies, shorter and higher power pulses, and somewhat similar T/R modules. In fact, the dropping price of T/R modules is a factor in the recent rapid development of HPM and radar weapons. The Green Pine radar, like Vigilant Eagle and MP-RTIP, is an AESA system. Its original design left considerable room for the addition of many more transmitter/receiver modules on the face of the radar. As a result, say IAI researchers, the "Super Green Pine," due out in 2006-07, is expected to produce double the power output (a number they will not reveal) of the first-generation design. Vigilant Eagle and MP-RTIP both feature a 21-ft. antenna. Green Pine, by comparison, has a 36 X 12-ft. array. The Arrow and Green Pine systems were exercised Dec. 2 as part of a two-layered missile defense system (after being linked to a lower altitude Patriot missile battery) in a live-fire test at Palmachim AFB, south of Tel Aviv. Link 16 communications are expected to tie the system into U.S. Aegis missile-defense ships and Patriot batteries. It was the first flight of the Arrow 2 M4 interceptor with a new electronic package and software blocks co-produced by IAI and Boeing. The Black Sparrow target was launched from an F-15 flying over the sea. The interceptor was launched from Palmachim. Israeli officials would release few details about the test other than it involved an "extreme scenario." Defense analysts are worried that Iran is developing decoys and maneuvering warheads (or those that break up or spiral) for its Shihab 3 (a variant of North Korea's No-Dong 2) or planned Shihab 4 missiles, which could be combined with a nuclear warhead, says one of the Israeli officials. They are also concerned about Syria's development of a more advanced version of its Scud-D ballistic missile. Improvements to the Green Pine system allow analysts to use the signal phase and polarization changes in radar returns to more accurately identify warheads and decoys. They have also been concerned with high reentry speeds with the Shihab 3 and 4. Israeli planners also have reassessed how they will deploy what were to have been three batteries of missiles and radars. [link to www.youtube.com] |

According to a report published in Defense News this weekend, the United States and Israel have signed an agreement to deploy the “X-band FBX-T” early-warning missile radar system, which is linked to a U.S. satellite-based alert network. Deployment of the X-band comes as part of America's agreement to help defend the Jewish State against any future strike by a nuclear-armed Islamic Republic. For the first time ever, military personnel from the U.S. European Command are to be permanently based in Israel, in order to staff the high-powered radar system, built by the Raytheon Company. Although the original target date for the system’s debut was early 2009, it is likely that the date will be moved up to sometime this autumn, in order to allow personnel to integrate the system with the Arrow missile defense system. The new system is expected to double – and possibly triple – the range of identification of incoming missiles aimed at the Jewish State, according to a spokesman for the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency (M.D.A.). The official said the X-band system can track an object the size of a baseball from a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers. The system currently employed by the IDF, a component of the Arrow system dubbed “Green Pine,” has a range of only 800-900 kilometers. Once the “X-band” is integrated with the Arrow system that range of identification will expand to 2,000 kilometers. The new range allows the Israeli public an effective window of approximately five minutes in which to prepare for a Shehab-3 ballistic missile attack from Iran. It similarly gives the IDF five minutes in which to intercept the Iranian missiles. Arutz Sheva news |

State TV quoted air force chief Gen. Ahmad Mighani as saying Iranian warplanes can now fly 3,000 kilometers without refueling. He didn't specify the aircraft type or explain how the range was extended. Israel is about 1,000 kilometers from Iran. Such a range could be achieved by using external fuel tanks attached to the wings or fuselage that can be released when empty. Sunday's report did not refer to Israel by name, but Mighani's remarks come after an IAF air exercise in June that US officials described as a possible rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80172Three guesses. From the US taxpayers, what's left of the US working class. About 75 million dollars a day goes to Israel, not to mention fighting Israel's wars for them, and Israel's false flag terror attacks on us, like the USS Liberty and 911 - and meanwhile our infrastructure disintegrates, millions homeless and without health care, and our own borders almost completely wide open - and here tehy are preparing for their next Holocaust - in Iran this time. War without end. War is peace. |
