Why were they scared, because they were invading hordes of psycho murdering raping marauders, that killed anyone not like them with extreme prejudice.
Why else would you be afraid of fanatics with a cause?

Actually I made a mistake with the Hittites, they conquered vast areas but made them citizens.
Their government lasted 800+ years and became Persia. So somewhere int here, but all Empires start out benevolent. |

1- Mongols (they could have taken the whole of Europe after defeating many armies, but decided to go back to hold a funeral).
2- The Moors (Muslim army that took Spain and ready to take over Europe)
3- The British (creators of the biggest empire on earth)
4- The Persians, threatened to take over the Greeks who were at that moment the top of European civilization
5- The Vikings (brought death and destruction with their marauding forces)
6- The Europeans like Spaniards, Belgiums and the Dutch (brought death and destruction in many American, African and Asian regions with their imperialism and not to be forgotten the Crusaders)
Just some examples in arbitrary ranking though I would put the Mongols definately on spot 1. |
