Dont bookmark this, print it and put it in a safe place.

I couldnt open in safe mode due to a bad dll file.
The only solution is a complete reinstall and reformatting the hard drive.

I created the disk, booted up and it let me copy everything to an external drive I had. You can use a flash drive too.

What a deal. I saved everything on the external drive and will have to reload my programs when I reinstall, but I didnt lose all the critical stuff in the "my docs" folders.

Oh here's a winning idea. Lets give someone who was dumb enough to screw their *Windows* install up a disk with a linux distro on it. GREAT IDEA. I'm sure they're smart enough to follow the very detailed and specific instructions included in the guide you linked. I'm just sure of it.

I love how the instructions are basically asking someone who's hosed WinXP to magically download and burn this ISO image to a CD...from their WinXP desktop:

"If you have a computer that refuses to boot up, and there are files you absolutely need on its hard drive, don't despair! This article will take you through a step-by-step process whereby you can recover those files."

"As you can see it's a large file & will take some time to download, whatever your connection ... Download it to your desktop"

Oh really? Which desktop would that be? The WinXP install that won't boot or another desktop that magically appears when you open this guide?

Recovering win32 files from a linux distro is hardly new and this guy hardly did anything to make that process ANY easier for the average user. I'll give you half-credit for trying to be constructive though...

You can download this to your desktop, but if you get the dreaded "blue screen death", you are plumb out of luck. Your desktop won't even show!

I got my problem fixed with the help of Microsoft techs (while they still supported Win/Me). What a mess! But everything was recovered except Outlook Express files.

If you go for the download, do what PAC recommends...print it out!

better idea is to connect the problem HD as slave in another computer and backup the files, then reinstall windows 95.

I have five computers. I downloaded the fix it to a laptop, created the disk and then used the disk on the infected unit it to transfer the data to an external drive. Pretty simple. And yes, I scanned the download for kittens.

Why do you have to be a jerk about this. This is a good idea. Many people have an extra PC sitting in a closet or in the garage. I do.

And if you don't, have you ever heard of having friends that can help.

Quit being so cynical. It is a good idea. So what if its is not new!

If you keep it up, you may never find that dream person that you are looking for!

Just backpack your hosed drive as a slave :D: drive. Boot from a clean install on a different drive (:C:)then access you files from :D:

Recovered a lot of lost data and program files that way.

What the OP posted will work just fine. If Linux is too intimidating then download the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows. It runs Windows XP and the same thing can be accomplished.

The only issue with the OP's linked instructions is the use of a Flash Drive. I don't know about others, but my PC has about 30 Gig of pics, music and vids so by the time I got enough flash drive space to hold all of this I could have bought a new HD.

Of course a second HD in a PC is a really good idea as it allows you to mirror the drives. This will help protect against a disk hardware failure. Something the OP's instructions will not help with.

Oh, I have been a PC tech for 20 years and even the best PC tech/user can corrupt an operating system. Ever hear of power outages, incompatable software or a disk developing bad clusters? So don't let the trolls here bug you.

Look who the OP was and there is your answer as to "why". However, it's absolutely unfair to shit all over the information just because of who posted it. There isn't anything patently *wrong* with the info. The points I was trying to make were:

a) The guy is telling you burn an ISO from a supposedly useless windows installation (remember, thats why you're using this guide?)

b) Dragging files over from a corrupted install *always* carries the risk of reinfecting your NEW OS install.

c) You've just figured out how to mount a fat32/NTFS drive in linux. Why the fuck are you going to go back to windows now? Stay. Enjoy yourself. It's free.

So, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I apologize to PNW and everyone for my negative comments on this thread; it was entirely personal bias and completely uncalled for. This is a perfectly valid (and cheap) way to recover files from a win install that's been corrupted. Just burn the CD before you corrupt your install...
