Re: BREAKING: SPANAIR PLANE CRASH IN MADRIDQuote

Plane was an MD87, over 20 years old. Seemingly the flight was a cooperation between Spanair and Lufthansa with a lot of German tourists heading for their vacation destination.
The left engine caught fire but speed of plane already reached V3, point of no return and skidded off the runway.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 421189

It was a ex Korean MD 82 fresh from factory in nov. 1993.

I live in Spain and I'm watching the news here. They are saying 146 are dead 26 are in hopitals.

I have flown this airline and it was the worst plane I have ever been on. VERY unsafe I was worried and I'm a easy going flyer.

Terrible news.

No Spantax is a now defunct airline that was based (oddly enough) out of the Canary Islands. It went out of business in the late 80's which is I believe when Spanair came into being. But they have no relationship as far as I know

Not the same companies, Spanair began in 1986 and Spantax closed in 1988.

Anyway Spanair have financial problems and today they were discussing about firing around 50% of their employees.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG regrets to announce that:

Spanair flight JK 5022 that crashed in Madrid was also a code-share flight with the flight number LH 2554. Unfortunately, Lufthansa is currently unable to confirm whether or not, or how many Lufthansa passengers were on board.

Spanair has set up a telephone hotline for family members and friends under:

+34 800 400 200

I find they often have the lowest prices in Spain (after Ryan Air which has a very nice fleet of planes)

After a bad bad BAD experience I had flying from Barcelona to Madrid this year I have avoided Spainair.

In fact I have a trip to Madrid next month from Italy planned and I paid MORE to use another airline because of safety concerns.

I just got the feeling they cared more about saving cost than being safe.

Re: BREAKING: SPANAIR PLANE CRASH IN MADRIDQuote

Some time ago, same kind of plane in US:

American Airlines Cancels Flights To Inspect MD-80 Fleet Again To Ensure Technical Compliance With FAA Directive

FORT WORTH , Texas – American Airlines is canceling several hundred flights today to conduct additional inspections of its MD-80 fleet to ensure precise and complete compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration’s airworthiness directive related to the bundling of wires in the aircraft’s wheel wells. These inspections – based on FAA audits – are related to detailed, technical compliance issues and not safety-of-flight issues.

“We’ve been working in good faith to ensure that we are in complete compliance with this airworthiness directive,” said Gerard Arpey, Chairman and CEO of American Airlines. “We regret and apologize that we are once again causing inconvenience to our customers, but we will continue to work in good faith until we satisfy all of the technical issues related to this airworthiness directive.”

It is not known at this time how many cancellations will result, but it could be as many as 500 today. Additional cancellations are likely tomorrow.

American will re-accommodate customers on other American flights or on flights operated by airlines in the same market. Customers may be automatically notified of flight changes; they should also check AA.com or with their travel agents for flight status.

The FAA raised additional concerns regarding the recent inspection of American’s aircraft and the manner in which American followed the engineering change order (ECO) that had been written for the airworthiness directive related to the wiring in the MD-80s wheel wells. Specifically, some areas of concern included the spacing of the ties on the wiring bundle and the direction in which the retention clips and lacing cords were facing.

American has assigned teams of employees that include aviation maintenance technicians, quality assurance inspectors, and engineers to inspect the aircraft and ensure full compliance, as well as to make the necessary adjustments.

Any aircraft that does not completely comply with the detailed technical specifications of installation will be removed from service until all specifications have been met. Aircraft will return to service as they have been inspected and all necessary work completed.

Additionally, American has applied for and received FAA approvals of an alternative method of compliance (AMOC) for this airworthiness directive that has already been applied to the MD-80 fleet of other carriers.

One channel in Spain is reporting 150 dead.

Another channel claims the plane did take off and crashed off the runway in a wooded area.

CNN International reported the plane did not take off. I think CNN is wrong.

Uh, it only has two engines, both mounted on the aft section of the fuselage. They don't look very big, and the airframe could probably stand to be repowered with a little more "umpf."

I fear this is not appropriate to say, but to get it off my chest: living in Spain as a german I say, thinking about security for spaniards is a tabu. For many years now I would never board a spanish airline. If you'd only know what I have seen here! Spain is leading in Europe in labor and construction accidents. I have seen buildings collapse because of underground constructions... These people got to change!

Re: BREAKING: SPANAIR PLANE CRASH IN MADRIDQuote
