this situation is not going to fade away
Im more worried about a "non-response" or weak talk than physical threats because the PNAC boys and the Cheney team are quietly scheming up something "good" to answer Russias bold move in georgia
They wont let Russia get away with this.
I think Iran has a green light now because if Israel/US does not attack it will be perceived as weakness and loss of face.

Attacking Iran via South Ossetia
Could the conflict between Russia and Georgia be the excuse the Bush administration has been looking for to bomb Iran?
Stephen Kinzer guardian.co.uk, Wednesday August 20 2008 10:30
An editor I once worked for told me that when his parents and grandparents discussed the day's news over dinner, they would inevitably finish by asking each other: "Is it good for the Jews?"
"Whether it was a war or an earthquake or men landing on the moon, it would always come down to that," he recalled. "They saw everything through that lens."
This year, I've developed a comparable pathology. I am terrified that the Bush administration is going to attack Iran sometime before it leaves office on January 20. Whenever there is a new tremor in Washington or the wider world, I ask myself: Does this make an American strike against Iran more or less likely?
So it is with the recent dustup in Georgia. I fear it has increased the chances that the United States will bomb Iran.
If there is a single principle that underlies the Bush-Cheney view of the world, it is that all countries must accommodate American interests and none may be allowed to emerge as what the 2006 Quadrennial Defence Review called a "near-peer power". This is a recipe for conflict, since many countries will naturally try to increase their power whether or not the US wants them to.
"Let Hercules himself do what he may," that insightful geo-strategist William Shakespeare observed, "the cat will mew, and dog will have his day."
Russia's day is once again dawning. That is not necessarily bad. A multi-polar world shaped by balances and equilibrium is, in the end, safer and more secure for everyone.
This view, though, is abhorrent to the Bush administration. It remains caught in the post-cold war fantasy that America's brief "uni-polar moment" can last indefinitely.
In recent years, the Bush administration has sought at every turn to challenge Russian interests. It has worked to cut Russia out of energy pipelines, expand Nato up to Russia's borders, build missile defence bases near those borders, promote the independence of Kosovo and encourage former Soviet states like Georgia to spit in Russia's strategic eye.
This approach worked while Russia was prostrate. It was inevitable, though, that Russia would eventually begin to re-emerge as an influential power. Now it has.
Washington protested Russia's crushing of Georgia with howls of outrage. President Bush declared with a straight face that "bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century."
Mouthing such pious hypocrisy is about all the US can do to reverse Russia's recent gain. The US and Russia need to cooperate on a host of strategic issues, and Georgia is not a vital interest to the US. The logical thing for the US to do now would be to take this hit and move on.
President Bush and vice-president Cheney, however, may have another idea. I'm reading their minds, and this is what I fear they are thinking:
"We're on our way out of office. The way things look now, the last confrontation between us and the bad guys will have been one that they won. We can't let our term end that way. This can't be the last word. We have to go out in a blaze of glory. Where should we set off that blaze? Iran, of course. No country has taunted us more relentlessly. By bombing Iran, we will send the world a defiant farewell message: Forget Russia - We Still Rule!"
For years before the September 11 terror raids, a clique of millenarian ideologues in Washington had been urging a US attack on Iraq. The raids gave them their excuse. Now I fear the same may be happening with Iran. Georgia could be the excuse.
American policy toward Iran has for decades been shaped by emotion, not rationality. Emotions are now running hot in Washington. Iranians have nothing to do with the Russian invasion of Georgia. I hope they do not soon have to pay a bloody price for it.

The Afghan fire looks set to spread, but there is a way out
The war in Afghanistan is running out of control. The multiple attacks mounted by Taliban guerrillas on Nato occupation troops on Monday and Tuesday - in which 10 newly arrived French soldiers were killed near Kabul and a US base hit by suicide bombers - are the most daring since the US-led invasion of 2001. More than 100 people have been killed in fighting in the past three days, as the war against foreign occupation has spread from the south to the east and the area around the capital.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 314607 8/20/2008 7:23 PM | | Re: Russia warns NATO against re-equipping Georgia's military | Quote | One thousand U.S. troops began
a military training exercise in Georgia
on Tuesday (15th July 08)
against a backdrop
of growing friction between
Georgia and neighboring Russia.
Officials said the exercise,
called "Immediate Response 2008," had been
planned for months and was not linked
to a stand-off between Moscow and Tbilisi
over two Russian-backed separatists
regions of Georgia.
The United States is an ally of Georgia
and has irritated Russia by backing
Tbilisi's bid to join the
NATO military alliance.
"The main purpose of these exercises is
to increase the cooperation and partnership
between U.S. and Georgian forces,"
Brig. Gen. William B. Garrett, commander of the U.S. military's Southern European Task Force,
told reporters.
The war games involve 600 Georgian troops
and smaller numbers from ex-Soviet
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
The two-week exercise was taking place
at the Vaziani military base near the capital
Tbilisi, which was a Russian air force base
until Russian forces withdrew at
the start of this decade under
a European arms reduction agreement.
Close cooperation
Georgia and the Pentagon cooperate closely.
Georgia has a 2,000-strong contingent
supporting the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq,
and Washington provides
training and equipment to the
Georgian military.
Georgia last week recalled its ambassador
in Moscow in protest at Russia sending
fighter jets into Georgian airspace.
Tbilisi urged the West to
condemn Russia's actions.
Russia said the flights were to prevent
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili
from launching a military operation
against the separatist South Ossetia region.
Moscow accuses Saakashvili of preparing
to restore Tbilisi's control over
South Ossetia and the second breakaway
region of Abkhazia by force.
Tbilisi says that is a pretext for Russia
to effectively annex
large chunks of Georgian territory.

Open yer eyes..
So issuing passports is now grounds to get killed? Tell that to your dual-citizenship masters Chertov and Bzinski. LOL!
Get a brain would ya numbskull? It's a CURRENT tactic to INSERT Russian civilians into disputed regions - where they will have to be "rescued" during a "crisis" (of Putin's invention)..

BRUSSELS, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia's ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin warned Wednesday NATO against filling the gap of losses of the Georgian military incurred in its conflict with Russia.
"Any attempt of NATO to fill the gap of losses of the Georgian army contradicts the conventions of the OSCE (Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe)," Rogozin told reporters.
All NATO countries, Russia and Georgia are members of the OSCE.
He said the provision of strategic armament to Georgia and the flight of NATO reconnaissance planes along Russia's borders as requested by Georgia are regarded as hostile actions to Russia.
He warned that these actions may make Russia change its position on its relationship with the West, including military cooperation and on Moscow's policy on Iran.

Whaaaat?
What are you smoking?
They created a pretext HOW? They didn't start this. U.S.-controlled Georgia launched the brutal attack on Russian civilians and then Russia retaliated.
Of course they are taking full advantage of the situation, just as the U.S. would in a similar situation -- but let's not buy into the BS propaganda in the U.S. about how Russia started all this, as that's complete and utter bunk. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 380168
Please support your assertions with FACT, and I'd like to see more than Pravda or any other russian-leaning news source as your evidence.
True, I do believe that our own sources in the US aren't much better - other than maybe their ability to paint a more colorful picture on the BS they sell; however, logically, Georgia's "brutal" attack on these provinces has not been proven at all, and the Russian actions to date stink of nothing more than a play for control of this region - and the Georgian people, whom they despise.
So, based on the true, undeniable facts that we have in front of us today (i.e. Russia remaining in Georgia, expanding their presence, and expanding their control of key infrastructure related to European trade and energy, as well as threatening their neighbors and lying to the world on basically every front) it is increasingly obvious that this is a power play by Russia and nothing more. Ossetia and Georgia are simply pawns in this much larger game...
The lines are quickly being drawn, and the true faces of all players will soon become evident to all. |

On a related note, see below:
Excerpt from an interview in June 2008 with Putin by G8 journalists:
VLADIMIR PUTIN: I would start with the Adapted Conventional Armed Forces Treaty in Europe (ACAF). We have not just stated that we are ready to comply with the treaty, like certain others have done. We really are implementing it: we have removed all of our heavy weapons from the European part of Russia and put them behind the Urals. We have reduced our Armed Forces by 300,000. We have taken several other steps required by the ACAF. But what have we seen in response? Eastern Europe is receiving new weapons, two new military bases are being set up in Romania and in Bulgaria, and there are two new missile launch areas - a radar in Czech republic and missile systems in Poland. And we are asking ourselves the question: what is going on? Russia is disarming unilaterally. But if we disarm unilaterally then we would like to see our partners be willing to do the same thing in Europe. On the contrary, Europe is being pumped full of new weapons systems. And of course we cannot help but be concerned.
What should we do in these circumstances? Of course we have declared a moratorium.
This applies to the missile defence system. But not just the missile defence system itself. Since if this missile system is put in place, it will work automatically with the entire nuclear capability of the United States. It will be an integral part of the US nuclear capability.
I draw your attention and that of your readers to the fact that, for the first time in history - and I want to emphasize this - there are elements of the US nuclear capability on the European continent. It simply changes the whole configuration of international security. That is the second thing.

I wonder if creating a pretext to invade and savage your neighbors "contradicts the conventions of the OSCE"??
As far as Iran - Russia has been a thorn in the side of the west on Iran - even supplying their nuclear fuel. Fuck 'em - at least we know who our enemy is.. Quoting: Grizzled Old Goat |

Russia warns NATO against re-equipping Georgia's military

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 467001
Do your own research. I'm nobody's reference librarian and have no interest in countering propaganda machines.
But, this should get you started:

Issuing THOUSANDS of passports into a disputed region during a separatist crisis IS AN OBVIOUS STRATEGY TO CREATE THE CONDITION FOR INVASION - yes..
Ukraine is next..

Absolutely, GOG! There is no doubt about it! This has all been planned in advance by Russia aka (USSR)(former KGB colonel Vladamir Putin, former president, now acting prime minister) [link to articles.latimes.com]
There are a number of people who need to get the blinders off or they will never know what hit them when the truth descends on them too much like the angel of death. Russia is not now, nor was it ever, what it wishes the world to perceive it as. Please read this! [link to articles.latimes.com] |
