"Health Canada confirmed Wednesday that one person in Ontario has died as a result of listeriosis.
The Public Health Agency of Canada said 17 cases have been identified across Canada, with 13 of those in Ontario.
Earlier in the day, Maple Leaf Foods announced it was expanding a recall of its packaged meats and temporarily closing a Toronto plant that prepares the products."
"But Health Canada is not drawing a direct link between the two events.
The Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial public authorities are trying to confirm the source of illnesses. Maple Leaf said Wednesday it was recalling all products prepared at the plant since June 2 and temporarily closing the factory to re-evaluate its food safety procedures.
On Sunday, the meat packer announced it had discovered listeria bacteria in Sure Slice roast beef and corned beef produced at the Toronto facility and issued a recall on those products.
As of Wednesday, some 23 products, including a variety of turkey, smoked meat and roast beef products, were subject to a recall.
Brand names for the recalled products include Schneiders, Sure Slice, Deli Gourmet and Burns Bites. A complete list of affected products is available on both the Maple Leaf Foods website and that of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The 23 products involved in the expanded recall carry an "establishment number" of 97B and have best-before dates ranging from Sept. 30 to Jan. 1, 2009."
If you're still eating beef as of 5 years ago, then you've been playing Russian Roulette with your life.

generally true
If one must then they should consider buying it from a trustworthy farmer with healthy cows...not guaranteed either but corporate whore meat packing companies or farming operations produce much greater risk-due to the volume
corporate whore conglomerate farms produce greater contamination even with vegetables/produce-same with the meat only much more dangerous imho

Re: WARNING: Massive Meat Recall: I even had some in my freezer!!
Listeriosis is a bacterial infection caused by a gram-positive, motile bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes.[1] Listeriosis is relatively rare and occurs primarily in newborn infants, elderly patients, and patients who are immunocompromised.[2]
In veterinary medicine, however, listeriosis can be a quite common condition in some farm outbreaks. It can also be found in wild animals; see listeriosis in animals.
Two words: KO SHER. Or better yet. Just stay away. Being careful with your meat products is the same as wearing a condom to an African anal sex party. Safe is a relative term.
All part of the plan to thin the poor, fat herd. This person was lucky enough to die quickly. Most of those who have been poisoned by companies like this don't even know it yet.
"Gee, Mom. I'm not sure why but it hurts when I poop, I can't lose weight even though I'm 12 and the only thing that will snap me out of my crippling depression is more of that wonderful processed food you keep buying for me".

Yep. There are reports of suspected Jakob-Creutzfeld disease in humans until certain men in suits associated with the Bush Administration and the U.S. Beef Industry pay a visit. Then the diagnosis magically changes to Alzheimer's, even for victims in their 30s.

Re: WARNING: Massive Meat Recall: I even had some in my freezer!!
Yeah, Schneider's. I keep seeing that commercial on tv, the black and white one, with J.M Schneider saying "if I wouldn't serve it to my family, you shouldn't have to serve it to yours" or whatever. He goes on to assure quality in their products.
Well J.M, are you gonna feed your family tainted meat? I guess he probably can't answer, as he's been dead for quite some time, but it's still a good question!
This sucks. Now I'm looking at some killer steaks in my freezer and thinking that maybe they really are KILLER steaks, in that they may kill me if I eat them.
I'm scared of meat now.
Help!

Re: WARNING: Massive Meat Recall: I even had some in my freezer!!
Listeriosis is rare, but not unheard of. When I was pregnant last year, I was cautioned against COLD lunch meat. Has to do with the slicer, and at the deli, it might not get cleaned properly or foods could cross-contaminate.
However, heating the meat until steaming kills the bacteria. I wouldn't eat it if it was part of the recall, but if you are worried, just heat your meat.

Well apparently, some of the Schneiders family did actually work on the floor and at that time they cared alot about the workers.. that was way before my time there but now Maple Leaf took them over and things changed. I think the meat was from the Toronto plant, not ours though we do have some deli meats, for MrSub Tim Horton's and Subway.. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
